What is menhaden fish oil?

I give my dogs the tripett brand, canned green tripe and noticed that they also have an advanced skin and coat formula with added duck, salmon and menhaden fish oil.

I have been trying to search for some information on this ingredient and found a few things on this site which said that it was a poorer quality ingredient but I'm still not sure I know exactly what it is?

Mehaden is a fish which is alot like herring. As it's plentiful and VERY oily it's often used for bait or chum to catch other fish. It's not a primo variety of fish. If I were looking for a fish-only food I would not look for one that contained mainly menhaden but as an ingredient being used for it's oil, it's okay.

Thanks for your reply! I feed my dogs the Orijen fish but as a supplement I add the tripe which they love and I feel it gives them some digestive enzymes and omega fatty acids that they need.

I wanted to try the other formula but wasn't sure about that type of fish oil.

Thanks!
