Atlas needs help
Hi everyone, I have a 14yr old part border part spaniel dog who I know is getting on in age but after our last visit to the vet a few months back, were told he is in great health for his age.
The reason for his last vet. visit was a tumor that was growing on his back paw, that is pushing his toes apart. We were told that amputation was our only option, and considering his age we decided the alternate option, keep it clean and wrapped everyday. Over the last 2-3 months the tumor has doubled in size but Atlas gets around ok other then I have to carry him up any stairs, couch or bed. The tumor I know is a problem for him and we can live with that, but what has scared me is atleast 5 times that I can remember since we noticed the tumor is he will go into a panic attack, (heavy breathing, shaking) and he can not lift himself off the ground with his back legs. Kinda like a temp. paralasys or numbness. This condition usually lasts for a few hours then he seems to be fine. It has happened in the middle of the night when he has been laying down for a few hours, and has happened in the day when he may have hurt his paw walking around. Anyway is this being caused by the tumor causing pain to his back paw that he wont or cant stand, or can this be something else like bad hips? It would kill my wife if we have to put him down (she has had him from puppy) so any other options or ideas that can help Atlas live out his remaining days alittle more comfortable would be grately appreciated Thanks BTW great site was so happy when I came across it |

Heavy breathing and shaking can be signs of pain. It's possible that he's hurt his back or is developing arthritis that is causing spasms in his back or hindquarters. Once the spasms subside, he'd appear to go back to normal.
What kind of tumor does the vet think it is? If it's a malignant tumor, the cancer might have spread, causing the new symptoms you're noticing. The only way you'll know for sure is to take him back to the vet for evaluation. Regardless of what the cause is, the vet should be able to suggest ways to keep Atlas comfortable. Make sure you ask lots of questions. Best wishes for you, your wife and Atlas! Please keep us posted on how he's doing!

Thank you for your reply, I will try to get him in to the vet. tomorrow, you have got me thinking about the spasms and arthritic hips. The tumor he has is non-cancerous
Thanks again. |

Atlas needs help
Another vet visit is needed with questions like: are his spasms and pain being caused from him favouring the tumored paw and his inability to walk normally and what are the risks of this surgery?

I was just wondering if an interdigital cyst (furuncle) has been ruled out?
