I'm cooking the boys some stew
I can't believe I'm doing this, but Bentley is a beef hound and only likes the real thing, doesn't like the pate mush in cans, no matter how good the food is. He's just as picky when it comes to any other meat as well....he likes chunks of real meat in it, not that preformed crap, so I got some stew beef today and some potatoes and carrots and it's on the stove right now. We'll see if he's happy with it.
It's actually cheaper than buying the canned stuff, at least the stuff I've been buying.  At close to $3.00 a can and a can each a day mixed in their kibble, it's pricey canned anyway.If they like it I'll start doing the same with chicken thighs and maybe make them a meatball stew too. Cindy

Yes I knew about the onions, so none in it. Did put some garlic in it though, not much. Hubby was all excited when he got home, thought dinner was ready (we don't usually have dinner until around 8). I told him he gets to have steak and shrimp for dinner, so he's happy to wait. Cindy

Sounds neat! Maybe I can make my cats some chicken stew sometime
 for now I'm lazy and use Halo Spots Stew premade stuffs.

Well, the stew was a big hit. Two shiney clean bowls, they loved it. I got enough for another 2 dinners for them left, so home cooked beef stew is now part of their menu. Gonna get some chicken thighs and make a chicken stew too. Not much different then cooking stew for us except a higher meat to veggie ratio and no onions.

mm, lucky dogs i love beef stew, its one of my favourite foods ever
do you tihnk they are willing to share, i dont even like the onion pieces, so no onions is perfectly on with me

I have been doing some reading on cooking for your pets and I also have made stew for my girls. It is cheaper than the canned food and they love it!
I don't think this matters if you are feeding at least 1/2 kibble each day but if you are feeding exclusively meat with no bones you should add some calcium to balance the calcium to phosphorus ratio. I add crushed egg shell (1/2 tsp eggshell per 1lb of meat) or even easier, I just soft boil an egg and cut it in half leaving the shell on and they crunch it up. I mix it with their kibble, just like I do with the canned food. I gave them canned duck tonight and only Baxter ate a little, Bentley is holding out for more stew.
I'll be cooking up beef and chicken stew from now on I guess. I have enough of the beef left for their dinner tomorrow. Neither dogs likes lamb so won't be giving them any of that. Might try cooking up some liver for them once in a while too. Actually, chicken livers are perfect bite size little morsels, they might be good.Cindy

If you are mixing in kibble then you don't need to worry about balancing it all out..since the kibble (as long as its high quality of course!) will do it for you!
It sounds to me like you are just spoiling those doggies and I know they are LOVING it!

The kibble is Natures Variety Instinct mixed with Orijen. It's very good kibble.
I did try to get them off the kibble at one point and just go with the canned, but they wouldn't eat the canned unless the kibble was mixed in, so they get what they want. Yes I spoil them and the cats too, but that's what having fur kids is all about isn't it. Cindy
