No more gassing unwanted pets
No more gassing unwanted pets
Corner Brook – The city has suspended its practice of gassing animals at the city pound. City council made the decision Wednesday night after a summer of intense criticism. The pound has used a box hooked up to a vehicle's exhaust to kill strays for years. The average is 700 dogs and cats each year, but a campaign by the Humane Society and city residents forced council to review the practice. Mayor Dave Luther says no more animals will die by carbon monoxide poisoning, at least for the time being. He says city council is working with the SPCA to come up with a better method. He doesn't know how they'll handle unclaimed strays in the meantime.
