The Toenail Battle is Over!!
I've been working with Miss Bayley for awhile now with her toenails. She absolutely hated having them clipped. She'd growl, fuss, try to take my hands away with her mouth, never actually biting, pull her paws away, you name it she tried to get me not to do them. So after finding her fave treat, Beggin Strips, we started slowly doing them with the strips. I'd start with just taking a teeny microscopic sliver off, then a treat and so on.
Well, today, I said you wanna get your toenails done!? Well, she starts running around all excited and looking at the top of the fridge where I keep the Beggin Strips!! I was sooo happy, so I grab a couple and the clippers and sit down, well, bam there's a paw in my lap, no asking, no begging, no fighting or even flinching. Less than 5 minutes and nails are done! Such a nice change! |

Anyone who can do nails in my book is to be worshipped. Not me, nuh-uh. Just can't do it. And you, not only CAN you do it but they run to you....
I have to admit the chems in Beggin Strips scare me but, I am also of the opinion ...if it works and it's the lesser of two evils GO WITH IT! Have you ever tried real jerky? Or homemade liver treats ~ they're amazing bribes too. I'm the worlds worst groomer btw |

I've tried other things but these OMG, I think I could do just about anything to her as long as she knows there's a beggin strip involved! She only gets them for special things. A big bag lasts months.
Now if I could just convince Noella of the same thing..she's a majorly squirmy feisty little bugger!! Bobee, grumbles and growls and complains but he's all noise. Noella, I think I'm going to have to mummy wrap her (with duct tape!) |

Ferals, eh?? Got a suit of armour!! I had a hard enough time giving pills to Nino! I'd take Bayley chewing on my hand any day over getting a good chomp from a kitty!

Patty, well done. Isn't it lovely when the penny drops and they realise you are not out to cut their foot off? When you said she gets all excited I laughed because it reminded me of Perkins, my male cattle dog. We do all our dogs as they lounge back against Ian's shoulder, belly up on his lap facing me. Silly Perkins would be so enthusiastic, because of his rewards - yummmm- that he'd race into the room, back up to Ian and try to do a reverse jump into his lap. LOL. Crazy mutt! The shelties all mill around us wanting it to be their turn next. mumx3, it was also a job I thought I'd never be game to do, picturing blood everywhere from nails cutback too far, but I think I'm kinder than my vet. That and tooth scaling are good skills when you have a few I think.

It is very cool when you get a complete turn around! From something they hated to something they look forward to! That's sooo cute with your guys!
Has anybody tried those nail clippers that sense the quick? Bayley has mostly black nails and I still worry about clipping too far. She still isn't fussy about the dremel and usually I end up getting my shirt wound around it!! Mechanically challenged here! I have a regular file that I use to get the sharp edges and she doesn't mind that. |

Never heard of these ones before? Mollie's nails are all white but Gryphon has a few black ones which kinda scare me!
Never had a problem clippin their nails with the good ole fashion kind but if they resemble the quick clip snippers, I might be interested in them. So happy to hear of your success with Bayley and the strips!

Patty, you are actually braver than I am. I bought a Dremel and then was too chicken to use it, thinking how awful it'd be to get sheltie hair tangled around it. Yikes!!
I think it's a real buzz when they suddenly accept what you have to do. We had one dog, bought as an adult, that was terrified and obviously his previous owner had hurt or traumatised him in some way. I spent so long playing with his feet, just lightly skimming the clippers over a nail at a time, never trying to cut them, but while, yes, I could do them alone in the end, he was never in the pack milling around, he'd still lie down quite a distance away and hope that we'd miss him. Poor dog. |

WoooHooooo! Congrats, pattymac! I've been bribing Grace toe by toe, too, and she's finally coming around. She was quite the squirmer when she first arrived. I have to do our dogs' nails about once a week in winter and every 10 days in summer, so getting her to stand for a nail trimming was essential! By the time I get to Grace, I've already done 24 paws and am too tired to go chasin' the lil rascal around!
If you handle their feet like a farrier, klm, standing over them and bending their legs so you can see the underside of their paws from above, you should be able to see the quick where it nestles inside even the blackest of nail sheaths.
