Welcome to the forum Marcie!

What a beautiful girl, Rick & Carol. Looking forward to Ruby's introduction next week.

I'm sure Abbey & Keeper had something to do with this.

I was wondering if you were going to get another pair of goldens. I actually went to goldentales last week and followed one of your links to a golden board you frequent and saw the news about Marcie and Ruby there. I'm so happy for you. Both are beautiful dogs and they will be on cloud nine living with you and your wife in that beautiful part of the country. I'm so looking foward to hearing more tales and seeing lots more of your amazing pictures. Congratuations!

Marcie, still just a puppy, has learned quickly she needs to give our handicapped, two-footed terror Polly a bit of space . . . .

. . . . . resulting (below) in a wary truce of sorts . . . .

Abby and Keeper were actually afraid of Polly and kept their distance generally.

. . . . and yesterday, below, the minus 35 temperature of a few days ago gave way to plus nine Celcius and melting under a brisk wind, so Marcie got out to explore the mile long walk to the mailbox on the highway.

Our obscure corner in the distance of this picture was the site of a day of filming late in the Fall for the movie adaptation of Jack Kerouac's 1950's classic novel "On The Road." The movie will star, among others, Viggo Mortensen, Kristen Stewart, Amy Adams, Kirsten Dunst, Steve Buscemi, etc, etc. I think we are being substituted for California as some older, 1950's cars and a big truck with those plates on were being used in the production and parked just ahead of where Marcie is standing.

Tomorrow, weather permitting, we'll bring Ruby home so she doesn't have to try to play with cats. A storm is brewing though.

Love the pic of Polly on the deck and Marcie relegated to the snowbank! 'Course, as a golden, she's probably just keepin' her belly comfortably cool there...they're so hot blooded!

I hope the weather holds long enough for Ruby to come home tomorrow as planned

Ah, such a pretty girl. You know, in that photo with the hind foot up, I don't think she's cold. I think she is so overwhelmed at her good fortune in finding you that she forgot to put it down.

Awww, I love Polly. She is adorable with her colouring. Good for Marcie to learn so quickly that Polly is for looking, not touching.
How are things going with Ruby added to the mix?

Thanks . . . .!!!!

Introducing Ruby, from yesterday and now in surgery being spayed today. My brother says she looks like "1/8th hound dog" and she isn't a classic Golden per se. I'm told she is probably a "field" Golden. Not complaining, just observing she is different than the classic look.

Below, never far apart, Marcie, who's a beauty queen, and Ruby . . . .

Below, mid-winter, lots of snow and long shadows . . . .

. . . . . and the ongoing struggle for dominance between these two newcomers, posturing, wrestling, humping, the whole ugly business. The first seven or eight hours together was an epic, unsightly spectacle but Ruby eventually began asserting herself and might actually be top dog.

Below, Ruby being harrassed by Marcie in those first few hours . . .

But quiet moments too . . . .

Lots to learn but having fun generally.

They're both just gorgeous. I think she likely is a field golden. They are a little different. Funny I saw a 10 year old male field golden a few weeks ago at a job interivew I went to. He was much larger boned than his traditional golden house mate and he had a much curlier and shorter coat than her too.

I really like their colouring.

So the golden fun and adventures begin again.

I have come to look at the pics here several times, but haven't yet commented, only because I always start to cry .
I fell in love with Abby and Keeper via Golden tails and the pictures and stories you would share here.
I always looked forward to your pictures of Abby and Keeper on an adventure.
My very "bestest" friend ever was my Golden Benny, so I'm partial to the breed, and I wish I could bring another one into my life, but even after all these years, I just can't. So I envy you that you are able to open your heart and home and start a new adventure with your two new GoldenGirls!
They are beautiful Rick, and I wish you many many wonderful years together and many many new wonderful adventures.

Thank you everyone, for your wonderful comments.

I should let you know, however, that the integration of Marcie and Ruby did not go well and, with the help of her breeder and former owner, we found a new home for Marcie on a ranch near Calgary on the weekend.

From the moment Ruby stepped out of the vehicle, our otherwise delightful Marcie was obsessed with her and the fight for dominance, if that was what it was, was escalating.

Even after our decision to relocate Marcie and having initiated the search for a new home for her, we were waffling on whether we were doing the right thing or not. But on Saturday morning, as Ruby was rounding a corner of the house, Marcie tried to throw herself through a window to get at her. I heard this loud bang and there was Marcie, bouncing off the window and tearing up the furniture in the sun room trying to get out. In all seriousness, it was a wonder she didn't go right through the glass . . . . so that ended our waffling and, coincidentally, a new home was found for Marcie that afternoon.

Our veterinarian is also a professional dog trainer and licenced behaviourist and had met both Marcie and Ruby. Her advice, along with advice from experienced rescue and foster care people we've come to know through the years via Goldentales, indicated we effectively had two choices in this matter, seek a new, qualified home for Marcie OR look at a year-long process of fairly intense training for both of them, then a lifelong committment to that fairly strict regimen.

The advice we had from those sources was to take the "easy" route and that did make sense as it would hopefully free Marcie of whatever anxieties were taking her and obviously, as a result, we would not be facing living a lifestyle of regimen that would probably be anethema to our own character.

The breeder already knows the rancher, having placed a dog with him before, and knows Marcie will be riding the range every day and leading a happy life. All concerned approved of the new home and we are comfortable that she is well placed..

For whatever reason we may never know, Ruby was simply causing Marcie a lot of anxiety.

Readers of Goldentales may remember about six years ago when a client of mine - people in their 70's - asked us to take in their 10 year-old female Meg because the wife had MS. On day one, there were a few dominance things between Meg and Abby. On Day Two, incidences turned into battles and on Day Three there was bloodshed, with Abby bearing the scar of that on her skull for a full year after. The otherwise peaceful Meg went back to her home - her owners astounded by these reports - where she lived out her days in continued peace.

It wasn't as bad as that with Marcie and Ruby but it appeared to be heading that way as the plucky Ruby would engage if forced to . . . . which was becoming most of the time.

After the window incident, I took Marcie for an hour and a half walk along the pathways in town, where she was a delight and obedient.

We have nothing but good things to say about Marcie as a stand-alone dog. Our time alone with her was terrific but for some reason, combatibility with Ruby was a large problem for her and it was a choice of calling it early or gearing for the long haul.

I'm sure this is disappointing news for all - moreso for us - but we expect Ruby will get a new partner in crime in the summer or Fall, one where we are less reliant on naive hope and wishful thinking and more on careful planning.

Ruby, meanwhile is blossoming, as the pictures below will indicate. She arrived from an environment where she spent most of her time kennelled in a garage. She had a bit of a "sway" back and no muscle tone. She had an ear infection that was untreated. She had matted hair and hair that was wiry and falling out for lack of proper nutrition. At first, we wondered if she was a purebred Golden but now we are sure as her hair gains luster and her muscle tone improves, with the back looking straighter.

Below, Ruby, caught in a gust of wind yesterday, her first big adventure out of the yard.

Below, Ruby explores a gully carved by the wind out of the snow . . .

Below, Ruby's big, bold, new world . . .

Below . . . . an industrious Ruby explores and smells something that's not quite right and . . . . .

. . . . . finds her first corpse, always a moment to make new parents proud. It was fairly big, stretched out a ways, and buried pretty deep with this small morsel easy to dig up . . .

Ruby, enjoying the deep snow . . . .

. . . . . but later, at home, giving the terrifying two-footed buzzsaw Polly a safe distance. . . .

. . . . . but there are plenty of places at home where cats won't bother you . . . .

. . . . . . and a new days ends for Ruby, ready for more adventures in the coming years . . . .

Carol says Ruby is now wont to walk down a snow trail, stand around for a while, looking about, then suddenly take off running at top speed into the distance, as though realizing she's allowed to do just that for the first time in her life.
