Day Time Training
I was wondering if any one has any tips for day time training.
My 2, almost 6 month old Border Collies are home in the day by themself. They are not kenneled but they are kept in their puppy playland in the basement. It is undevloped but has older carpet, older furniture and bones and toys galore. That is their place. My problem is they don't go to the bathroom in the house once we are home and are getting pretty good at waiting until morning, (4-5days a week they wait until morning) so their bladders are maturing. During the day they have their corner where they go on "puppy pads". I don't know how to break them of the habit. Now, are they ever going to wait until we get home or is the full day just to long? My greyhound at my parents house does wait until some one is home but I suppose the longest she is alone is 6 hrs whereas the BC are alone for 8hrs. Any ideas? Or should we just be prepared for them always going in the basement on their pads just because of the length of time they are alone. Thanks |

This is one of the problems of getting puppies when no one is home to housetrain them. Your puppies are doing exactly what they were trained to do - poop and pee in the house. Good dogs!
When they are old enough to "hold it" for 8 hours (not sure what age that is, someone else can tell you) then you take up the pads, use an odour neutralizer (like Nature's Miracle) in the corner where they go, and put their food bowls in that place instead. They will not mess on or near their bowls. If their potty place is gone, they will learn to hold it for the day when they are older, but papertrained dogs dogs can take awhile to get the message that's no longer okay to go in the house. This is kind of confusing for them, so be patient. When you take them outside, praise extravagantly when they go! In the meantime, not really much you can do about it unless you have someone who might be able to come and walk them in the middle of the day? |

Do you have kennels for them? Dogs don't go to the bathroom in their kennels unless their absoloutly desperate, or unless the crate is too big for them.

8 hours a day? Oh no, I guess that wouldn't be good then. Sorry about that. And I agree, keeping puppies in kennels that long would be abuse

I'm assuming that you can't/don't have someone that could come home at lunchtime? If you could have someone who came home for an hour at lunch during the working day to let out the puppies for a bathroom break, exercise, food. then you might be able to use the crate. maximum time recommended in a crate is 4 hours, it does seem long but if they are properly exercised outside of your working hours as well it could help to housetrain.
I think relying on dogs going in the house at all during training makes it more difficult to train them. for training purposes-if you want them to go outside teach them to go outside. Do you have a neighbour/friend/petservice in the area? Once you get through the housebreaking stage, usually your dog can stay out of the crate in the house with no accidents for an entire day, so it might be worthwile to make sure they are trained properly for the benefit later.
