EYE infection?allergies?HELP

hello everyone,

i havent been on for a while.. i need your expertise... rexie is due for his annual vaccinations on friday... but i have another problem...this time last year he got allergies, and i gave him benadryl and he was okay after a week or so, but this year he got the same thing, and the meds dont seem to be working. but last year i had the lamp collar( i forgot what it is called when they get neutered) so he couldnt scratch at it, but this year i dont have one anymore so its getting worse.

what is the best advice you have? should i rush him to the vet asap or can it wait till friday?( its just cause im a student so i basically live paycheque to paycheque and payday is on friday and its so hard for me to borrow large amounts of money)

also, what can i do to make it betteR? put cold water on it? help!

lastly, what are the bubbles that are on his eyes?

Oh my goodness, I hope you get a lot of input on this. That is a troubling photo (thank you for posting it, though- I'm sure it will be very helpful). I believe something like that could be anything from SEVERE allergies to an auto-immune disorder.

Is he eating/drinking as usual? Bowel/bladder habits the same? Does he seem to be feeling unwell?

should i rush him to the vet asap or can it wait till friday?

I would rush my dog to the vet, BUT I have been known to overreact, so I'll leave the more level-headed posters to advise you in that regard.

I'm just really sorry that you and your furbaby are going through this.
I hope you get some answers, and he gets some relief SOON.

Yikes! That looks very nasty and painful... If I woke up with that eye, I would be at the docs that day!
Can you write the vet a post dated check, maybe?
I don't think it would cost that much for an exam and meds for it, if it's an infection or allergies...
I hope he feels better soon!

I would make the trip to the vet as soon as possible (perhaps you can get them to give his annual vac's at the same time, thus avoiding a return trip on Friday). Depending on your relationship with your vet, they may let you pay with a post-dated cheque.

If it's not allergy related, I wouldn't get the vaccinations just yet. If the dog has a comprimised immune system due to an infection of some kind, the vaccinations could stress it even further. Just as you wouldn't give a child vaccinations when they are sick, you shouldn't with a dog either. That eye does look really nasty - I hope that you can get him looked at before Friday. Good Luck!

That looks horrid. I was hoping you had an update by now. I have to tell you that it might be an eye infection but it has several signs of being much more serious. My dogs eye started with the bubble and then they burst and it lost the fur and became very scaley with the skin falling off it. He was diagnosed with heptocutaneous syndrome. A skin/liver disease of unknown cause. And that was after three vets and finally a vet dermo specialist. After biospy it was found he had zinc responsive dermatitis. He lives on zinc now and is doing very well. What breed is that. Certain breeds are more dispositioned for certain auto immune diseases. Or metabolic conditions. I would ask the vet to please let you post date a check or make up a payment plan for you. I wouldn't waste too much time. Is there any other sores? Hair loss? How do the pads of the feet looks. How about the anal glands? Mucous membrane involvements signal serious problems that need a specialist. Please note the attached picture of jax.

Those are stitches on the side of his face from a biopsy. I realized it looked even worse without an explanation! I hope you answer back what happened with your dog. good luck

i did go to the vets and they gave me BNPH ophthalmic ointment

its working

i was scared that i was about to put 5,000 into this...

question: im a student who doesnt have a lot of money, but i do make enough for his annual visits, toys, top quality food and (who can forget) TREATS! but what if something serious happens and i cant afford it? should i set up a fund of some sort? i would NEVER EVER wanna put him down if something happened, knowing me i would spend 50000000000000 if i could on him.

what are your thoughts?

definatly start a fund. I am also a student, I work part time and all my money that doesn't go on bills goes to Candi. I have a savings account that I put $20 in every month at least and if I have extra left over at the end of the month I put that in. I'v been doing it since I brought candi home. This is strickly emergency money for Candi. I also have a cat but she is sort of a family cat so my mother pays for her vet bills. I also know I can count on my mom for a loan if something should happen so I don't worry about it too much because I know I would have the money if I needed it, between her and my dad I could get enough for whatever Candi or Jasmine may need, even after I move out.

But yes definatly start a fund. It's always a good idea to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

What a great idea. I admire you for being young and so responsible. I have no clue how expensive pet insurance is. Wish I had explored that when my dog was younger. Best of luck with your furry friend.

A fund is a great idea. I remembered when I was a student I did the same thing for my cats. Every month I put away a certain amount of money. However, it is sometimes not enough. That's why I got a insurance plan for them. There are lots of different choices available if you live in the states or Canada or Britain. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot available where I live now.
