Exclamation Warning to Raw Feeders in Wisconsin

I found this posted on another forum:

Quote:
Apparently a case of pseudorabies (Aujeszky's Disease, caused by porcine herpesvirus) has been reported in Wisconsin:

http://www.brownfieldnetwork.com/ges...269269D30433C4

Pseudorabies is not dangerous to humans, but it is to dogs. Like for some other viruses, there is no known effective treatment, the only option is supportive care and death usually occurs within 48 hours.

Pseudorabies is generally contracted after ingestion of contaminated, undercooked pork or infected rats. It is not transmitted from dog to dog though.

Possible symptoms (not necessarily all of them may be observed):
* Sudden behavioral changes
* Difficult and/or rapid breathing
* Excessive salivation
* Convulsions
* Depression, Lethargy, Fever, Vomiting
* Ataxia (difficulty walking due to poor coordination)
* Reluctance to move
* Severe itching
* Self mutilation
* Coma and Sudden death

Yeah, the farm is about 12 miles from here. We have feral hogs around here--and they think that's where it came from. One more thing to worry about

Initial testing on three slaughtered pigs from the farm came back positive for pseudorabies--they're still awailing confirmation from an out-of-state lab. If I hear anything, I'll post back...

Another farm, just north of here, has just been quarantined:

http://service.govdelivery.com/docs/...0070423_en.pdf

This is the official county announcement of the second quarantine, just SE of Loyal.

Sorry...tried to copy and paste the info, but I'm having trouble with the pdf file. According to the release, the farm in question has Russian boars Those are the 10-ft long, 6-ft at the shoulder monsters! If they go feral, you have more than "just" a pseudorabies problem! We had no idea they had the Eurasian swine in the county...
