Thumbs up Dog's feet and chin changing colour

I have an 11 yr old chihuahua, brinkle markings, with beige/white legs and feet. She has developed a biscuit coloured area of hair under her chin and on her two front paws. There is a slight colour change on the back legs two. My vet is mystified, he is thinking along the lines of a saliva problem, as she has had teeth removed and her tongue now hangs outside her mouth. Her tongue also looks redder and cracked. We are trying to put water on it frequently. She is eating well and poops ok. Any help with this mystery would be a help, as we love our little girl. The only other problem that she has is that she is allergic to grass, and in the spring has to go for allergy medication.

Is the colour change a rusty colour? Does she lie down with her chin on her front paws often?

It could just be the saliva, as the saliva has a very high acid content, it tends to discolour the fur it soaks into for long periods of time.

Do you have a pic of the paws and chin?

Talking Dog's feet and chin changing colour

Many thanks, unfortunately the last photo was prior to the staining. But you may have pointed us to why the change has occured now. If saliva is acid, the a change of dog food that had a higher acid content would emphasise it. Yes, she always rests her chin on her front legs, and grooms and licks herself just like a cat. Eleanor

You may want to try to take her off all prepared dog food and cook for her fresh foods and see if this helps. It's better for her and will also help her fight off whatever is happening to her , by boosting the immune system. Will also help with allergies.

You may want to think about what you are using to clean the floors and carpets in your home and the bedding. Lots of chemical products can do this Carpet and floor cleaning solutions are highly toxic to you and your pets, and so are a great number of laundry detergents.

Do you have new carpeting or flooring or a new sofa or chair? Even the chemicals in 'stain resistant' furniture or flame retardants can do something like this. Do you use something like swiffer or oust and how about bathing, do you bath the dog often? People with smaller breeds tend to want to bath the dogs a great deal which strips the coat and skin of natural oils and also the chemicals from the shampoos cause irritation.

Those are some other things to think about.

I clean my home with mostly baking soda and vinegar that's it. I use natural laundry detergents and no scented products in my home.

Lightbulb Dog's feet and chin changing colour

Many thanks Luba! When we read your reply, we remembered that we had shampooed the carpet in the familyroom about 6 weeks ago and used a different type of shampoo other than the usual one. So I will just go over it will plain water and see if it brings around a change. Other floors are hardwood. I use very little in the way of cleaners, as I am allergic to a lot of them.
