Holiday Dinner?
Does anyone cook a holiday dinner for your dogs? As you all may know, the Canadian Thanksgiving is coming up this weekend and I wanted to make something special for the dogs. I feel so guilty having 4 turkey dinners and they don’t get anything.
Any ideas of what I could make for them?

We will be having BBQ Salmon, pototoes, broccolli and baby carrots for Thanksgiving dinner so the dogs and cat will each get a portion with their evening meal. We normally share healthy leftovers with them.

Growing up we used to cook and feed the gizzards to the cats when we had turkey dinners. If you buy a turkey with that stuff still in it, you could cook the liver and give it as a treat to the dogs.

This is the first thanksgiving that I'm not going home for, because I have a midterm friday night, and one tuesday morning. So Layla and I are celebrating it alone. We're going to have a dog-friendly meal of cornish game-hen, sweet potatoes, cauliflower and cheese, and homemade pumpkin icecream. Quite a lot of work for just two "people" but we're worth it I'll probably regret it next week when I'm out cleaning up after Layla, but oh well.

My mom has always cooked the gizards and inards and whatever else ards in the bird and gave it to the dogs. As far as I can remember she just let it boil until she was ready for the humans to eat then she would take it out to cool and then they would get it half way through the meal or so.
Ofcourse the dogs did not complain one bit!

I'm lucky my family is not religious... We only have one dinner and it's more because of tradition than because of the meaning of the holiday. Wait till christmas. Last year we had 8! My brother sometimes has over 10 christmas dinners. Christmas is when "broken" families are the most annoying. 4 separate parents, with grandparents and aunts and uncles who have to have a turn too... We always almost break up at Christmas. It's very hard. You get 2 weeks off and spend 8 of those at other people's houses. My doggies are at home alone on Christmas eve and for dinner Christmas day. It's too much for us. The ones we really want to be with are alone. They really don't get what they're doing to us either.
(sorry, I got a bit ranty and self-pitying... ) My doggies do end up getting enough turkey that they don't need more treats than that... |

I hear ya Prin. Holidays for me have become annoying ever since my parents split. You have to make sure everyone sees you. My BF parents are split as well. Every holiday we have four seperate parents to see. However, I am lucky that I get to take my doggie to the family dinners.

Can I join in?
Now, no offense to them, but my mom's family is nuts, and highly dysfunctional. It makes Christmas-time hell, because my mom gets super up-tight over her family's behaviour. So for the past 6 years we've been escaping to the south to avoid her family, but this year we're staying in Canada for Christmas, so keep an eye out on the news for a report of a grown family of 4 and 2 dogs who go AWOL after Christmas dinner. |
