10 year old golden retriever with the nasal discharge mentioned

Our golden retriever, Rowdy, seems to have the same nasal discharge with green mucuous as your other poster about Mackie - what on earth can we do. Our vet took a culture - said he has "a scant amount of 4 bacteria" and we are trying baytril....this is his 3rd round of it and while sometimes it seems to be getting better, I guess it really isn't going away.

His appetite has been affected. He doesn't want any food from our hand. He is eating only because we are feeding him smaller amounts more often.

Our vet suggested going to a specialist for a scope too, but I just didn't want to have to have Rowdy anesthetized and scoped. Is there any other way they can determine how to help him. His medical history is extensive and this is one of many persistent maladies we've had to deal with......we just can't bear to think we should euthanize.

Can you make any suggestions? PLEASE! Thank you, Binnie Mitchell

Binnie, If there is another way, I haven't found it. The only positive I can give you is that if it is green, there is still a chance that it's bacterial. What I can recommend is that if you are going to get him scoped and are in southern ontario, make the trip to Guelph, the ontario vet College. Your vet will have to make the initial appointment.
I don't know what else to say. Mackie is still ill. He has gone for 3 treatments under anesthetic, 60 to 90 minutes each. He's been on either anti'fungals, or antibiotics, sometimes both, for 6 months. It's now 3 weeks after his last treatment and he's still having difficulty. I wouldn't wish this rollercoaster on anyone.
Hug Rowdy for me.

OH dear oh dear!

How's the oil of oregano treatment going? Can you get any 'into' him?
A couple of drops in some yogurt two to three times a day?

Poor baby, I can't believe this is still happening. I've been checking now and then to see if you have given updates.

It seems the immune system isn't fighting this off, and needs a boost. Antibiotics decrease immunity because they kill off beneficial bacteria.

I'd start giving shark cartilidge if you're not doing that yet.

What a horrible horrible situation, and I really hope this makes a turn around.

How are you coping through all of this?

Hi Luba,
It's been a horrendous rollercoaster for pastthe six months. Sometimes he appears to be getting better and then his condition worsens again. I've been holding off posting, wanting to be able to report good news.
I guess the only good news is that he's still alive. And he's happy. He's back to doing all the dog things he used to do... ripping apart the garbage, running away, chewing on stix. He's got a really good bounce to his step and he wants to go for walks and runs (not far though). The discharge in his nose has gone back to bloody this week but it could still be the fungas being killed and part of the healing process. How's that for optimism?
You've been a great support for me through this ordeal. Thank you again for all your help and support.

Another suggestion

Thank you so much for all that you are doing for this special dog. Kudos and much love to you! I wonder, though, have you ever explored the possibility that your dog has allergies? I had a dog that had them and one Benadryl a day worked wonders. He also had nasal discharge, lethargy, and fluctuating appetite. Come to think of it, so do I when I have my allergic episodes! The way I see it, you have nothing to lose. Just keep in mind that one Benadryl a day should do the trick. As with people, he may experience drowsiness at first. This should wear off after a nap, however. Keep us informed of his progress and again, thanks for all you're doing! I know EXACTLY how you feel!

It's really my pleasure I can't wait to hear how 'good' he's doing

And back to ripping the trash apart well hey thats a great start.

The bloody infection could be a sign that the body is starting to expel the infection from it..his immune system may actually be kicking in!!

psst hope you're giving him shark cartilidge cause that will def help the immune system.

You give him a great big hug fer me pls

Mackie is doing great!!! He's personality is back, his desire to play with everyone and everything is back and mostly his activity level is back to what it used to be. He still has mucous discharge but it is totally treatable with antibiotics. The wonderful amazing vet called this week to check on him and said that he may have to stay on antibiotics longer. We have him on shark cartilidge and on probiotics (when he's not on antibiotics). It's hard to believe how close he came to not making it in spite of all this proceedures.
Thank you to all the people in this forum who supported us through this and a huge thank you to the wonderful Staff at the OVC.
Here he is!!!!

Having a bit of trouble adding a picture. Let's try again. The oregano oil was OK, but he was way beyond it. He needed 3 nasal cavity treatments at Guelph to cure it.

Smile

The treatments were major. He was put under anesthetic and his nose was irrigated with saline to remove any free mucous. Then all exits from his nasal cavity were stopped up and the cavity was filled with an anti-fungal medicine and he was rotated every 15 minutes to ensure good coverage of all possible sites (side, chest, side, back). The entire procedure is about 90 minutes total and he's under for the entire thing. Post op varies from general lethargy to heavy bleeding from the affected areas. He also developed pnemonia from the second treatment.
This dog is a major trooper. Even at his sickest, he was friendly and co-operative. He never even growled at the vet, even when assessments hurt.
We're having major problems with our e-mail and uploading. I promise we will get some pictures uploaded. He's an awesome guy.

I'll say he's a trooper! That sounds very very invasive and painful.
You give him a huge big hug for me.
I sent u an email if you can email the pics to me I"ll try to upload them for you!

Poor guy, what an ordeal. I wonder where this came from to begin with? Were u ever able to determine that?

Apparently the fungas is everywhere in the dirt. In most cases their immune systems can fight it off. His couldn't. We have know idea what his life was like with his previous owners but his immune system must have been reduced to nil for a young dog.
We are going to continue trying to boost his immune system. and keep him smiling.

Somehow I missed this post, however, I wanted to say I am VERY happy to hear that your dog is better. When I was reading from first post to last, ,my heart was racing a bit more and hoping to God that it was a happy ending.

You are doing a wonderful job taking great care of your dog. I know many people wish that there were others just like you.

Please keep us updated. We would love to see a picture!

Hartwick, you're amazing. Like Goldenmom, I started reading this thread and realized it was from ages ago and hoped and hoped that it had a good ending. At first the second page wouldn't load, and now I'm relieved, although it's not all good news yet. But what a lucky pooch to have met you! May I ask how you are affording all this? It must be a serious drain financially and even more so, emotionally. I had a puppy with a fairly simple cough that just wouldn't go away, did distemper test and everything and he just wouldn't get better. That lasted about a month and it was sooo terrible and quite expensive. I can't imagine how you're handling this after 6 times as long!!! Is it just you and Mackie or are there other family members on this roller coaster with you? Once again, you're amazing!

Question nasal discharge

Hi,
I am new to this board and in searching for answers for nasal discharge I found this on the forum ....... A nasal bacterial infection, to my knowledge, would be more an immunodeficiency than an autoimmune problem.
There is a homéopathic complex named OCULONAT that works well on
these chronic sinusitis. It stimulates the yealing of tissus, decreases the inflammation and the secretions, increases the defense against infection.

The dog should take oraly 3 granules 3 times a day for a good month or two.
This type of disease usually occurs after giving a vaccination or from chemical insectisides.

I tried searching for OCULONAT and found nothing. Can someone give me a answer if this is spelled right? I would not give Sadie anything that I cannot study first. Right now she is on vitamins and doing better, but she still sneezes when she wakes up and has mild discharge I am sure the vitamins she is on helped her out. Fish oil omega 3-6-9......Vitamin C 500mg and of course Acidophilus it is a probotic. No more antibotics or steriods shots for this dog..didn't do much good. Thank You for any help you may give me..

Mackie's nasal infection - resistant

It's time to finish this thread. Please do not respond to this posting.

Mackie took a turn for the worse just before Christmas. After a trip to OVC and a change of medication, he continued to slide. His organs shut down and we were forced to make the decision for him.

I will always value the time we spent together, even though the greater part of it was battling his illness. He was a was an important member of our family and participated fully in our lives up until the last few weeks. I will always remember the depth of his heart and the ferocity of his loyalty.

Thank you all for your support and kind words through-out this ordeal.
Hug a dog today.
