(This story is upsetting and so I have taken the liberty of editing the thread title to reveal some of the story's content)

This is a sad terrible story....my gosh I feel so sad for the victim....

and I am bloody angry as pits are to blame again......THIS FACT will be the highlight of the story..... not the irresponsibility of the owners.

I see a few obvious solutions for this worldwide

1 - Make obedience/safety courses mandatory for anyone adopting any dog.
2 - Make people pay very high fines whenever their pet escapes and bites anyone for any reason.

How very sad. Poor Matilda, her owner must be devastated and lost. Again, bad owners and so many are paying the price.

My husband said this was discussed on the radio and it costs $30,000 here, in Australia, to train one of these seeing eye dogs.

I think it cost about around the same or more here to train guide dog and it is a felony to harm or kill a service dog. Mini horses are being trained to help blind people as horses have a longer life span . I hope the owner of the dogs has to pay the cost . My heart goes out to the young man . Losing my hearing dog to cancer was heartbreaking . I still miss him terrible . This story is so tragic and should never had happen.

Don't know if it's a felony here. Wonder how I could find out? It should be! And yes, perhaps the owners of those dogs should be liable for the full costs. It'll be interesting to see what happens next. Nothing can bring back these special dogs unfortunately, I imagine there is an incredible bond between owner and dog when the dog is an assistance dog.
