Hey, TulipRoxy, that reminds me...the emergency vet never said anything, like when Abu had them, about if they were overweight, they were more likely to get them back...is that still true? Skyler was a 14 pounder. I got Abu, the one in my avataur, down from 12 lbs to 9 since then.

The connection has more to do with diet than weight, meaning that an overweight cat is more likely to be eating dry food, and it's the dry food that is the big factor in a cat getting blocked.

A vet tech on another forum I go to once said: "Female cats shouldn't go within 5 ft of any kibble, male cats shouldn't go within 50 ft of any kibble, and a male cat that's had urinary tract problems shouldn't even be in the same time zone as kibble".

Cats who are obese are more likely to get urinary tract infections and crystals, as well as a host of other problems. This of course caused by poor diet, ie dry food.

Other risk factors ( for struvites)are:

Indoor sedentary lifestyle- cats that live indoors urinate less than those that go outdoors, and this gives crystals a chance to form
Females more frequently than males
Cats less than 5
Highly concentrated urine- caused by dry food as water is sucked out of the digestive sytem to try to reconstitute the dry food during digetstion
Stress, dirty litter box
Highly alkaline urine
and of course greater in cats fed dry food exclusively

However many times vets don't know what causes it, so it is called Idiopathic Cystitis...causes me to wonder who the idiot really is!

I am so sorry to hear about Skylar, I really thought he was going to be OK. You did everything you could for him.

Skylar

I used to feed Puddles a mostly cheap kibble diet before sugarcatmom and growler educated me and helped me with Puddles food change. She now looks 10 years younger and is much happier.

I'm so sorry about Skyler, drfreud. My condolences to you and to your friend. You did what you could.

Now, I have to agree. It is ALL about getting that message out there, and making sure my own cat never gets them again.
