Problems-dialup slowness since last upgrade

Granted my dial-up is excessively slow these days because of the phone lines, but since this last upgrade added the bells and whistles on the profile pages, navigating the board takes even longer. I'd say about twice as long to change pages as before the upgrade.

Although posting visitor messages is pretty quick, and the quick reply is pretty quick, getting between profiles, between threads or back to the index is even slower for me than it was before the changes. Trying to open and read PMs is even worse than switching between threads.

Is anyone else having trouble with this?

I am on dial up too and I belong to another forum with the same version of VBulletin,
it is slow to use PM and Profile pages, but Quick Reply is fine.
I think we are stuck with this until paying the big bucks for satellite hook up.

Until they stop requesting a social security number so they can do a credit check before installation, we'll never get satellite here... sigh

I'm doomed

Well mine is the same speed but I don't like the new features for other reasons.

So I will stop "inviting" friends and will probably won't reply to demands. Sorry but I just think this will cause frictions and if I want to chat with someone , I'll just use the pms. I don't want to check out everybody's profile to see if there's a conversation somewhere else than the TJT.

I agree with Frenchy. This is one of my posts from the TJT.....

Quote:
Another thing that is bothering me about the "friends thing" is that a while ago people were complaining that they didn't participate in the TJT because they thought it was too "cliquey".

All of the friends on my list participate in the TJT so that just confirms their belief even though we always welcome people here and even try to drag them in sometimes.

So I don't think that our friends list she be public for that reason.
Marko, there are more replies in the TJT from other members about this new feature if you have time to check them all out.

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if anything can be done about the slowness for dial up people and I feel bad about that. The engine that runs this bulletin board is always being improved for security risks (which are crucial to control), new features etc. They bundle all these together in one release.

In a sense, the amount of code that runs this BB is the equivalent to the operating system that runs your computer. As the operating systems get larger and can do more things, we need faster computers to handle the operating system...THAT's the example problem for dialup members. Even though your computers may be newer...you need a bigger pipe to transfer all the data more efficiently.

This is a problem all across the Internet...dialup people are suffering as our computers need to handle more and more data when connecting to the Net. I am ABSOLUTELY open to ideas here, but I'm at a loss.
At the end of the day, dialup has become (used to be fine when things were mostly text based) an inefficient pipe, not just for our board and similar boards but for the Internet in general.

In terms of the friend request thing, let me look into this now.

Thanks all...
Marko - Admin

I agree with the others on this, I'm opting out of the "Friends Network", I don't really see the point. I'm sure the intentions were good, but do not think it is necessary.

BTW Rainbow - You have more friends than me

Hi Marko,

Thank-you for looking into the issue.

I have been doing some of my own research on the vbulletin dial-up issue.

and I am wondering if it is fully optimizated for dial-up users?

Has it been configured in the admin panel?

ie: http://www.vbseo.com/blogs/maestrox/...width-load-73/

Also would you consider the forum's template/skin to be dial-up friendly?

If possible is there a spot users can switch templates? maybe a "lite" version of the forum?

I hope I can find something if you dont me researching :P

Tia,

DM

Diamondsmum,

I don't mind the help at all. VBSEO is a 3rd party add on to the engine that runs the board. The thread you posted is over a year old and likely refers to a PREVIOUS version of of the bulletin board.

Still I will take a look - and feel free to research more. (I could use the help)

many thanks!
Marko

I belong to another forum using this same package, and we also have a choice of versions we can use:
VBulletin3 (a plain-Jane style), and Glass version (which is the slowest).

happy to help.

With the forum having: Threads: 51,259, Posts: 645,034, Members: 30,382

and I know the old threads are still looked at by people researching issues with the pets.

I will keep seeing what I can find on this issue I am curious how many dial-up users we have that are regulars here.

Due to the "anti-clique" outcry, for now the Friends thing has been disabled.

thx

The board seems a touch faster today...could the Friends feature have been making that much difference?

Also, growler put up a picture album under her profile. Since the pics show as thumbnails, they load quite easily, even for ol' hazel. So now if I want to see pictures, I'll just have to pester members to use the albums feature!

Thanks Marko.

So since the message thing is still there is there any way that we can have a notification pop-up option like there is for pm's? I don't think too many of us check our own user profiles on a regular basis so a message could sit there for ages without being seen.

Yes that is definitely possible.
If other dialuppers could chime in on this question that would be great.

HMMM - I'll check on this in the next day.

I'm not sure about the pop-up option for the message thing....though I believe I CAN disable the whole message thing if people think it's a waste of time and slows the board down. Please chime in....

thx - Marko

I have high speed so it doesn't slow the board down for me. I guess the dial-uper's will have to answer that one.

I would still like to some sort of an alert for messages though if it's possible. If not we can just use a pm if it's something we want a member to see as soon as they log on.

Thanks for checking into it.

The other board I belong to has something in the top right corner of your screen where it says "private message" ours says "view notifications"....I think.

Hey Rainbow and others, so sorry it took me this long but there does NOT at this point seem to be an easy way to get a pop up for a visitor message.I agree it's a major turnoff. I can disable the whole thing though, that's cake. I suspect in future upgrades it will be an option. Personally I'll probably never use it...but it depends on you gals n' guys. ...sorry to throw it back atcha..

I so rarely go into my profile that I never see the messages, so I turned mine off. I think it made things faster for me, at least by a little. The thing that I have trouble with is the visitor messages on album pics. I never know they're there unless I check 'pictures and albums' in the UserCP...and even then, it doesn't tell me where the messages are. So unless I go out and load the big version of every picture in my albums (which takes a really long time in dial-up) I don't see them. Is there a way to turn off those messages for an individual member?
