Arent they the ones that look like the shaggy dog. I havent seen one in a long time but these people we new had one growing up and his name was Ben.

I would imagine they may be a lot of grooming work cause of all that fur - unless you kept him clipped short.

Is it bad to shave them? Do they have hair or fur?

see it says that they don't do well in hot weather but someone on flickr lives in california(or so the photo tag says) and the dog isn't shaved.
And i read some stuff and it's all 50/50...don't shave, shave and they'll be happier in summer. WHat the heck?!? lol

when they're shaved they look like a bicolor poodle, does that mean they don't overheat as much? or are they shaved for hair matting issues?!?

The last time we went to the dog park there was an english sheepdog there. I didn't get any pictures though. He was the cutest sweetest thing. He was such a big suck. He was playing with a dog and got so caught up in the moment, he ended up running into a sign and hurt his leg. We went over to help check him out and he was fine. He just wanted the attention and the cuddles because he spooked himself out. After he got all his attention he went off running again. I seriously wanted to steal him.

I know for other dogs, the longer fur is better for insulation from heat and from cold, which is why you're not supposed to shave. But I don't know how it works in hairy dogs.

I think we need an OES owner to set us straight.

Even though he was a happy dog and his owner was wonderful, I still wanted him. I wanted him to come home with me and be mine. He and Jesse would have such a fun time. I WANTED HIM!

Well it's been a long long time, but I used to own an OES when I lived in Montreal. She was a cutie pie. Her name was Panda. I only had her for about a year before I had to move into an apartment and I rehomed her to a friend's friends farm where she could actually do her thing - watch sheep. I think of her so often and regret having gotten her when I wasn't really old enough and settled enough that I could have ended up keeping her. Ah with age comes wisdom I guess. I never shaved her though.

They are a breed that you clip.

so i asked for information on this English sheepdog forum and the popular misconseption is that the fur acts as in insulant to heat. THAT IS NOT TRUE. Your pet can die if he's exposed to heat in the summer.
One board member shared this story were these people with 2 OES moved to Arizona from a cooler climate and they didn't clip their dogs and they all died from heatstroke.

Most OES owners clip their dogs in the summer. UNLESS....you allow your dog to be indoors at all times during the summer with air conditioning. NO WALKING and exercising during the day, only early morning and at night or they will overheat and died. LOTS OF WATER is also necessary.

If you trim the fur in mid spring, it'll grow back by the fall in time for winter. It will not bother the dog if he's shaved, on the contrary he will be better off.

If you live in a cold climate and decide to travel down south and clip the dog, keep in mind the body won't adjust fast enough to the climate change and he will get sick. Same if you travel with a clipped dog from the south and go up north in winter. Don't do that, it is not safe.

Keeping your dog outside during the summer, clipped or unclipped is not a good idea. It doesn't matter if there's shade or not, it won't make a difference. So best to avoid camping trips, unless there's an air conditioned trailer.

that is all I got from them..

That's right. It is true for double coated dogs though, who are regularly groomed.

The coat does not help with the heat, but dogs with pink skin that are shaved very short can easily be sunburnt and skin cancer can be a consideration. We keep both our beardie and our collie full coat all year, they don't seem to have more problems than shorter haired dogs. All dogs should have access to shade, water and limit excercise when it's hot.

clipping

I had an OES when I was a teen and we clipped Him every season, Also, I had a Rough Collie that just passed, and we began clipping Her (to my groomers horror) every summer when she aged and the heat became too intollerable (also, she could no longer accompany me on walks to the water where she would soak her coat to cool down).

OES are awsome dogs if you want a bouncy bubble headed pup (IMO)! They never seem to mature to the wise adult stage..lol. But they are a bundle of love and fun!

people who have experience have had them but they don't anymore. I wonder why not get another one after the passing??

Probably because of the grooming they require. My ex had to go all the way to Beauce to get one from a breeder.

sadly no

I had him when I was a teen. Sadly, I dont have much left from that era of my life. You know how it is.... when youre young you dont fathom needing to look back, only forwards.

I comtimplated getting one when looking over the last 2 yrs.... Yes, breeders are hard to find; OES have hip and eye problems..... but so do Newfs.... And I can say I have travelled far and wide to get my doggies anyways! lol.

Mostly, when I chose a Newf I was concentrating beyond the social aspect of a dog and intrigued by the recreational appeal. I was very interested in Water Rescue. Thought it would be a nice departure from obedience training. OES did make the top 5 list for me though... I think that was the first dog I ever REALY loved.

OES are not really for the first time owner unless you're lucky enough to get one about 2 years of age. They are high activity and the one's we see in rescue are there because no one could tire them out or had the patience to work with them. They aren't an easy breed. Every time we have one in, I pray there is someone who will be very knowledgable come along as we get a lot of first timers wanting them due to their coat. Think of a border collie on speed and you've got a young OES unless it's from really excellent lineage. Doesn't mean I don't like them though as the adults are awesome, it's just getting there that's hard.

high energy

They are indeed high energy! I jogged 3 miles 3x weekly with mine. And play soccer!!!! We had a huge yard and you could be out there an hour a day...easily.. playing soccer. We lived in town and He also went for lots of walks; If we went out, He accompanied.... yup, they need to be kept busy!

And lots of training.. or they get lasy and stubborn.
