Worried about my cats with no a/c!

It's been a HOT week here so far and I don't know that it's going to break alot anytime soon. Anyways got the two cats at home and no a/c! I am not a heat person, can't stand it, makes me miserable etc..All I can think of all day long is that my cats are inside with no a/c and I'm worried they are melting. Last night when the bf got home it was 84 inside. His cat goes outside so at night gets a little relief from the heat but is inside all day with mine. Probably more worried about his cat as his cat is 15-16 years old, mine is only about 4 and doesn't seem to be acting any differently with the heat, isn't even trying to sleep on the cold floors just relaxing where she usually does on the couch...
I'm use to being in a basement apartment so I've never really had to worry too much about my cat and the heat, how much is too much? Should I be worried or they will adapt?

bluequeen.maybe if you have the money you could invest in a portable a/c that they sell at Home Depot,it's freestanding, not a window-one.
I think cats are bothered by the heat, mine did not even want to come out with me today, but I have central air,so they are ok inside.

I actually do have a portable air conditioner but it really only works for the bedroom and the venting pipe that goes to the window gets really hot so it's not something I would feel safe leaving on during the day..

I know how you feel. I've had central air in the last 3 homes I've owned but didn't when I rented. One bachelor suite I rented many years ago was a sauna and I used to leave 3 fans blowing all day for the cats. I felt to guilt leaving them.

When I bought my current house I paid $3000 to install c/a and while I obviously wanted it for myself, too, a big reason was for my dog and cats.

When I fostered rabbits I was told to put some ceramic tiles on the bottom of their cage...they lay there when they were hot; it worked....my cats will lay on the tiled floor as well when they are hot.
Just make sure they have water and a fan ...cats don't need air conditioning. They will be fine

Good advice.

I had 2 cats when I used to rent. I was in the city so was pretty hot in the summer.I didn't have ac , my cats where never bothered by the heat.

Cats have a high tolerance to heat , I saw a documentary on kitties once , they showed someone who worked melting metal , and the cat would hang in the shop all day ... when he could have gone outside. I also noticed some cats will go on window sills , right under the sun , where it's very hot , and sleep there all day

I had a similar thing happen to me a couple of years ago. The a/c chiller was disconnected for two days! The good thing is, I have tile floors, so that kept my gang cool, and before I left home, I put lots of ice in their water dished.

Yeah the bf's cat was stretched out on the kitchen floor last night, not nice ceramic tiles (just linoleum) but cooler then the carpet! I can't believe my cat wasn't there as well but she was just chilling on the couch as she usually does.

And definitely a good point Frenchy there are many times mine will lie on the window sill in the sun, never really thought of that! lol

They do have lots of water available to them so that's good, as far as the fans, the bf and I don't see eye to eye on that matter, he's convinced it's just a waste of energy to have the fans on when no one is home, I on the other hand would leave them on 24/7 if I could!

But the cats are home. Heck, I leave the tv on for my cats when I leave for work.

a trick I use for my chin is to put a bowl of ice in front of a fan, I do it all on the floor so the cold air circulates, this way your cat can also drink from it, we use to have to do that in our aviary also

I know for a fact my cats are bothered by the heat,my Rocky had a heat-stroke at on time, seizure and vomit, very scary, but then he was outside playing in the sun.
Now I am much more careful with him.
Mine will lay in the sun in the winter, but not in the summer,it's too hot.
But I have a lot of shady places in my back-yard for them.
