Do cats need gallbladders? (and diet prn)

My friend has a 3 month old kitten who has had an umbilical hernia since birth. Surgery was planned for January because she's a tiny kitty, but this morning the hernia ruptured and the kitten had emergency surgery. The vet said that he also had to remove her gallbladder. When my friend asked if cats need their gallbladders he replied that he didn't know (), that she might have to have her diet adjusted, but that he'd have to look into it.

Does anyone here know the consequences of a cat having her gallbladder removed, including what the best diet might be? Or a link to the info would be dandy, too.
