With Bans In Place, Some Pit Bulls Being Dumped
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- With pit bull bans in effect in some metro cities, more of the dogs are being dumped on the streets, KMBC's Lara Moritz reported.
Two weeks ago, Sadie could barely lift her head. Emily Libla spotted the dog and stopped her car to help. "She was so skinny and so weak. She was having trouble walking. She was stumbling as she was trying to walk. She was so weak, I had to pick her up and put her in my car," Libla said. "I have never ever seen a dog still alive that looked like this one when Emily brought her in," said Kathy Graves of Brookside Animal Clinic. Moritz reported that in two weeks, Sadie's health has improved. But she is not the first pit bull dumped at the Brookside Animal Clinic. "He was sitting at the front door with a harness made out of telephone wire, tied to the front door," Graves said about another pit bull left at the clinic. Graves was able to help find a home for that dog, but she can't do that for every pit bull that comes around, Moritz said. "This is a pit bull that's been dumped because somebody can't have them, whether it was Overland Park, Lee's Summit, wherever. Somebody is hoping that they'll find a home for them," Graves said. "Regardless of the breed, no dog deserves to be abandoned and to starve to death," Libla said. Graves said because pit bulls are banned from some cities does not mean abandoning them is the answer. "You should not do this to any dog, I don't care if it's a pit bull or a cocker spaniel. No dog should be allowed to run on the streets like that," Graves said. The problem is that in many areas where there are bans if you take the pitbull to the shelter is is automatically euthanized, some people cannot handle the thought of sending their dog to its death, and yet they can't keep it either and out of state rescues won't take them because they are crammed full of their own pit bulls, so you only other option is to take your dog to the vet to be euthanized, some feel that if they turn there dog loose somewhere outside the banned area the dog will at least have a chance to live and that someone may feel sorry for it and take it in.
I remember about 25 years ago the city of Kitchener gave the red light to apartment owners to throw out tenants who illegally had brought pets into apartment buildings (it may have been province wide not sure) but of course with so many pets shelter got flooded fast and then started turning people away and then people where having to take to their vets and euthanize en mass, I remember things got kind of ugly many animals were being ste freee and abandoned and eventually the ruling was withdrawn, and eventually laws where changed to what we now have in Ontario that a landlard cannot evict you if you have a pet. Unless alternatives are offered other than euthanizing pitbulls where total bans go into effect the dumping of animal is going to occur as some people just do not have it in their heart to kill their pets. When I first heard the proposal to ban pitbulls in Ontario by Bryant I was quite worried that it might be a total ban and we would see 1000 of pitbulls simply set free, as much as I hate the current ban I know it could have been far worse. |

i dont really see how it could be worse(there is no way to eliminate excisting pits) we are muzzled, leashed(but who is not),forced sterilization(i'm for spay\neuter) but will end this breed in ontario anyway, and the only time our pets are free of restrictions are in our backyards........that is if we have conformed to the restrictions they have placed on that......seems a simple fence and gate may not be enough.....follow the burlington story.
