Solid Gold...puppy won't eat anymore..Now Eagle Pack..but Corn
Hi friends:
I have a 4month old cockapoo puppy.........I've had him on Solid Gold Puppy food for about a month and all of sudden he won't eat it anymore....... So the vet told me to change to California Natural or Wellness......... When I went to our pet store the guy tried to sell me Eagle Pack Puppy food........so I bought that-but when I got home it lists corn as one of the ingredients.......... It actually is the second ingredient and it lists "ground yellow corn" and then it list "corn germ meal" I thought corn was a bad thing?? is the above the same as corn? The first ingredient is Chicken Meal. Strange Eagle Pack would have this in their food? I thought Eagle Pack was a very good food.......... Should I switch to something else that does not list corn? I want to try and give my puppy the best "natural" food I can that does not have any fillers, colorings, preservatives etc............ Solid Gold was very good, but he doesn't like it anymore........... thanks for your advice. bunni |

I don't know about Eagle Pack, but Wellness is great food. It's all human grade ingredients and my dog does just wonderfully on it!
As for why Purina Corn meal, poultry by-product meal, corn gluten meal, soy flour, The first 4 ingredients are corn, soy and chicken by-products, which can be beaks, feathers, eyes, etc. This is what the bulk of the food is made of. Since cats are one of the most carnivorous of animals and must eat meat, grains and corn are NOT a good diet for them, and cats certainly do not eat the feathers and beaks of birds they catch, but not the meat. So I guess the consensus is Wellness dog food? I've been feeding my dog Eukanuba because I thought it was supposed to be the best. He had Iams puppy food as a pup at the breeder so I just stuck with the Lamb & Rice Formula.
He has a very sensitive stomach tho- if I give him wet food as a treat or he eats something other than his dry food, he has the tendency to get diarrhea. Is Wellness good for sensitive digestive systems? Any tips on how to make him stronger? He -LOVES- greenies but I find if he hasn't had it in a while, he will throw it up within a day or two. Anyone else have this problem? I thought Greenies were supposed to help with digestion. |

I've been giving Den-Den Eukanuba Lamb & Rice also, but I'm planning to switch to Nutro. I know our Petsmart here carries it. I'm not sure about the other recommended brands. I'm pretty careful what he gets because he had Canine HGE a little over a year ago and we almost lost him. No one really knows what causes it. Fluffy dogs can also have a real problem with "cling-ons" with the wrong food. That's one of the reasons poodle's tails are shaved at the base, not just to have a fancy pom-pom.

Lamb and Rice is good while a puppy. Just be careful when its adult food,as it is fattier than the rest of the meats. I need to watch the weight on ALL my girls, so I don't feed them lamb.

I feed my dog Eagle Pack. The second ingredient is ground yellow corn! Should I change my dog's food? We're almost at the end of the bag.

Nutram?...I would say it isn't.The third ingredient is the corn.
Why not just switch to the Eagle Pack Holistic?...No Yellow corn....

OK, we're on Eagle Pack Adult Formula right now, and I'll switch the food to the Eagle Pack Holstic if I can find it.
Thanks for the good advise.

Now I will be buying just one kind.....Halleluja!!!! They literally line up by the dish to have a go at it,never seen that before and the food is loaded with good stuff!!

Greenies can be quite dangerous. There were a couple of threads here a while ago discussing the risk of obstruction. If your dog is throwing it up a couple days after eating it, then that means that it is sitting in the belly for a couple of days waiting to move down the digestive system, but instead it comes back up. I guess in this case, it is a good thing it comes back up, because if it had to keep going, an obstruction could be likely.
