Exclamation Questions on pregnant cat and vaccines.

This thread is geared to the cat specialists that perhaps can help me.

I was at the shelter pulling animals for rescue. I saw a very pregnant gal who is due in about 2 weeks. As she was a stray I could not pull her until the pre-allocated time period for owner to surface. 7 days later...no owner.

I had my name on the file to not euthanize and I will pick her up as I have a foster home for her. My options were to either take her as is or have the kittens aborted.

As she is 2 weeks away (maybe sooner) I took the decision to take her as is. I did not want to have the babies euth'd and also for her mental well being I decided to let her have her babies. Right or wrong decision...I don't know.

However, the vet vaccinated her with modified Live Virus and Felo guard +3 (I don't know what this means). I have googled this and found out that this is problematic for her and the unborn but I cannot find anything relevant to the delivery date and when the vaccines are administered.

So - it is not too late to have her aborted though I rather not. Does anyone have any insight if this was safe to do, and if not, what can I expect if I let her go full term? I do not want to put her life in jeapordy first and faremost.

Can someone help me with this? I have 3 days to make up my mind on whether or not to abort.

Thanks for your reply to a very difficult situation.

If she was my cat, I would be watching her very closely for any signs of miscarriage, but would allow her to carry the babies to term and prepare myself for the worse. I would not abort until there was some indication that the mother is getting sick, at that point I would not hesitate to abort.

Thank you L4H. I did read that the fetus can die inside her - this could result in an emergency surgery. Or the babies can have birth defects... (which I think can be handled as there are people who are forgiving for the underdog).

So then I googled correctly. I assume it does not matter when the vaccines are given..they should NOT have been given at all at any point of the pregnancy. So there is no safe time then... (I wonder why the vet did this???)

The foster home that is taking her is a vet tech who specializes in pregnant moms and orphaned kittens. I will let her know.

That is a perfect foster home for her!

It is. I would have fostered myself (but I already have 3 kittens), and then when I found out she was vaccinated I decided I was not the right person for her.
Oh this is a tough one isn't it...

BM, your inbox is full so I'll post this here, if that's okay:

I've been thinking about your situation all morning and I wish I could give you an easy answer. I can't believe the vet vaccinated a pregnant cat with a modified live virus ! Do you know any history on the kitty? How old is she? I did read somewhere that if a cat has been exposed to panleuk in the past or has been previously vaccinated for it, that no harm will come to her unborn kittens. Not sure how or why, except that perhaps her own immune system is more capable of responding to the MLV quickly before it can cause any issues with the kittens. The biggest issue I think is that some of the kittens could possibly be born with cerebral hypoplasia, which isn't necessarily a death sentence. Have you heard of Charley? He's put a face to this condition on various youtube videos and has hopefully saved other cats from being euthanized for having it: http://mousebreath.com/2011/07/28/me...ypoplasic-cat/

I'm wondering if the timing of the vaccination isn't also a factor. If she'd been vaxed earlier in the pregnancy when vital cells were still dividing, perhaps it would be more of an issue? By this point, the kittens should be well formed and moving around in her womb. Maybe that increases the likelihood that they'll be okay?

I know lots of people would opt to abort, and I probably would have been one of those people in the past. Now I'm not so sure, given how close to term she is. After coming close to aborting my Cinnamon Girl's kittens after I trapped her, I'm horrified to think of it now. All the rationale in the world (too many cats, not enough homes, yadda yadda) melts away when I see Peppercorn and Carrot snuggling with CG in a sunbeam.

So I don't envy your position at all. If I were in your shoes, I'd probably go through with the birth and take my chances.

Good luck my dear!!! Let me know what happens.

Julie

BenMax how sad a situation this is, but bless you again for stepping in and taking charge. I hope for the best for this sweet kitty and her babies. Sorry I can't offer any advice at all, just my best wishes and thanks.

I was thinking the same thing. That is basic health knowledge

Exactly why I was thinking to wait until they are born, hopefully the babies are far enough along that this won't be an issue.

Had this pregnancy been not so late in term, I would have recommended abortion/spay, or, if the mother cat was not going to be going into a foster home, but left at the shelter where a change in her health may be overlooked.

Thank you SCM, L4H and DD. Based on all this I will take the chance and not abort.

So much appreciated. I will send her to the BEST foster home so that she can be monitored closely.
So much appreciated.

BM,I know nothing of pregnant kitties, but I certainly wonder why the vet vaccinated her,he should know better.
I agree with the others, let the babies be born,if there is a problem it can be dealt with then.
You as usual are a saviorand thank's to the fostermom willing to care for this little mommaall will be well with the kittens and mom.

When it comes to pregnanat moms I am very much so out of my element. The foster mom is going to be amazing and under the circumstances she is the most qualified.
I have no clue why the heck the vet would have done that. I don't know if they get so wrapped up in shelter policy that the animals are not considered on a one to one basis.

Anyways - as you all said, hope for the best and deal with it when and if it's time.

I appreciate all your input.

Hi BenMax,

I would like to know how are the kittens today? Did they developed cerebellar hypoplasia(wobbly kitten)?

My cat was vaccinated by accident while she was pregnant with Felocell too.

These is no documentation on the net. Pfizer refuse to gave me any information also. I hope that her immune system will "kill" the vaccine before it gets to the kitten. She was vaccinated for Feline distemper in the past so this is also a possibility but again, there is no documentation available!

Thank You,
Deep
