hot spot??

i originally posted here: http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=67557
asking if this red bump was as a result of her skin tag irritating her.
the skin tag is now gone - perhaps she chewed it off? it was very loosely attached.
she is licking her leg quite a bit. i have cleaned it and wrapped it when i am not around to monitor her licking. i will be calling tomorrow to make a vet appointment.
but could it be a hot spot? i didnt really know what they were, but after reading up on them, it sounds like thats what it could be.

any thoughts??
here's a pic:

I'm not an expert on these by any means but Cooper had one in the fall and it looked a lot like this. He needed two rounds of meds from the vet but that and some Gold Bond really did the trick.

thanks jm and scm
she does have an appointment for saturday, jenkinsdjtg.
i have been cleaning it and wrapping it - doesnt seem to be getting worse, but not improving significantly either. i am sure some antibiotics and/or topical cream will do the trick
it just puzzled me as she JUST turned 11yrs on the 27th and has never had a hotspot before. i hope that is all it is! *fingers crossed*

i did try those aslan they did seem to help! thanks
but i do think she will need a cone or atleast wrapped more securely so she doesn't lick it all off. she is good about it when i am around, but as soon as she is unattended, she goes lick-happy on it.

Sorry, now that I'm done ROTFL

Gracie gets spots like that when she licks. A dog is likely to lick an irritation or wound, sometimes to the point where it gets bald and quite red/raw looking. In our experience, preventing/stopping the licking when you see it, or worst-case scenario putting a cone on when you're not around, and a dab of antibiotic ointment will clear it up in a few days. The trick is mainly to stop the licking long enough that it can heal up a bit, so the dog is no longer compelled to lick.

My female labX had surgery at the age of 12 and an IV in her right front leg. She started licking the IV site shortly after it healed. She continued to lick it on and off for the rest of her life (14 1/2 yrs). It was a hot spot and we tried everything antibiotics, antibiotic cream, elizabethan collar, you name it. The only thing that finally worked was covering it with vet wrap so she couldn't lick it. I don't know what happens to elderly dogs as I've heard of this happening quite frequently, but sometimes they just fixate on part of their body and no matter what you do to get them to stop, they continue to lick it.

I don't know if this is killa's problem, just offering what I've experienced as a possible cause.

Good luck with Killa, please let us know what the vet says.

thanks dbg
it seems to be improving and she is not at it as much as she was a couple days ago...but a vet check is still in order for tomorrow afternoon. i hope it is just a result of her skin tag bothering her!
will keep you posted

one thing that is really bugging me is that i was at the vet a couple days before she started licking and chewing. while there, a doggie kept wanting to come visit her. this dog had sores all over its front legs - from ankle to armpit. i am not sure if they were hot spots, mange, or owies of another sort. i kept kiila close to me and behind me as i didnt want her near that dog as i didnt know what it had. but the lady kept letting him come closer and closer on his retractable leash (sometimes i hate those leashes!). i kept asking her to pull him back and she kept schooching him in about a foot, then he'd pull back out again to see kiila. after asking her about 4 times, i finally told her that kiila wasnt good with other dogs and didnt want her to bite him i didnt want to be rude and tell her to keep her cooties to herself...so i lied and made kiila out to be a vicious monster so she'd keep her dog away
i hope she didnt catch something from this doggie!!

i am sure i am just freaking out over nothing as it would be too coinky-dinky that it is exactly where her skin tag is/was.

but i do wish that people with ill pets at the vet would keep them to their side

(sorry for the rant!!)

That woman certainly was rude to let her dog near Kiila especially if those sores are contagious. I would definitely mention this to your vet as well when you go there today. They would know who the woman was and if Kiila could have caught something from her dog.

Good luck ....I hope it's nothing serious.

I completely agree with Rainbow I hate people who insist on allowing their animals to meet & greet at the vet. My vet tries to schedule a 5 minute break between clients so people and pets don't meet each other in the waiting room. I probably would have done the same thing that you did, portraying killa as an unfriendly dog. It seems to me it was your only choice to keep this dog away from killa. As Rainbow said I would definitely mention this incident to the vet because you never know what those sores on that poor dog were from. Good luck with the vet visit I too hope it isn't serious or something like Blackie's lick spot ..it drove me crazy watching her lick after awhile. She even got to the point where she would try to hide the fact that she was licking so I wouldn't correct her by saying "stop licking" Good luck with the visit

my baby girl is fine!
the vet said that due to the cold weather and crusty snow, she may have irritated her skin tag, which resulted in the licking and chewing. she said it wasnt a hot spot, but just an irritated spot. she said i did an excellent job at cleaning it and keeping it clean she gave her some antibiotics and some pretty pink vet wrap for when i am not home to prevent her from chewing and licking. if the wrap doesnt help, then its the cone of shame...but we opted to try the wrap first as she does not do well when confined to an area in the house...so that will be a last resort.

i did tell her my concern about the dog with the cooties and she said she would speak with the front desk staff to have them keep a closer eye on people and their pets in the lobby.

thanks to all for their concern and tips!

She looks great Hopefully it works better for you and killa than it did for me with Blackie. I think she wore hers for at least a year and even though I tried spraying it with Bitter Apple, it was like giving her a treat to lick. Killa looks like she's ignoring it, but obviously when she's alone, the devil in her makes he lick.

I hope killa's heals with no afteraffects

she is doing as well as can be expected with the wrap - she has tried to and has succeeded a couple of times in taking it off
i cant wrap it too tightly as on the same leg, she has a rather large cyst, so i have to wrap it above the cyst so it isnt squished.
i might wash her leg tonight and then put some vitamin e oil on her owie - maybe its dry and bothering her, which encourages her to lick.
if not, my friend is loaning me her cone, so i may have to resort to that for a few days until it heals enough with the antibiotics.

Awww Kiila ......so pretty in pink.

As soon as it isn't raw anymore dab some apple cider vinegar around it as that is good for the itchies and it also has great antiseptic properties. It was what helped my lab to leave his hot spot alone.

i have given up on the vet wrap - as she forces it down her leg, and i am afraid she will end up hurting her cyst that is on that same leg.
i got some bitter apple spray to put around the boo-boo and it seems to be doing a good job at deterring her its looking like i wont have to use the cone i borrowed from a friend.
(although, much to kiila's dismay, momma may still have to put it on her just for a super quick picture!)
