Jeans
My current job is a LOT more casual than previous jobs I had. THeir ideal of business casual is jeans and runners!
Anway, so after spending many years only wearing dress pants and nice clothes to work, that's all I really have, except old ratty house close for evenings and weekends. So, I need to buy some clothes for work. A lot of people told me that Zellers jeans were actually pretty good, and they looked good, but all the nice ones were stretch, which I won't buy. So..Old navy pants don't fit me right (if they are the right fit in legs and hips, I end up with inches of extra space at the waist, even with the low low rise). same with Gap (same make as they are the same company). I looked at walmart, and they didn't have any adult size low rise jeans (I can't wear anything that is at the waist..EWWWW). Now, I know the best place to buy jeans is Pantorama as they have about 50 brands and every shape and size, but they are $80 + and I can't afford that. Winners sometimes has jeans, but it's a madhouse in there and it smells and makes me sick. I just don't know anymore. I like Mavi jeans, but again they are too expensive. I need something that is low rise, hugs the hips, loose in the thigh and flares at the bottom (no tapering for me!). Anyone know any great places to buy jeans?

I really like Silver jeans (brand, not color ) but when I did a search for them, the store locator on their website doesn't seem to work. I buy them at Maurice's but I think they may even be available at Target. Target may be a good bet, good styles for less money.

I like silvers as well, but they are $80 + here in Canada. And we don't have Target here in Canada.
I have never found a Levi's style that fits me. Any suggestions?

I hate the way the ladies jeans fit, so I always buy the men's sizes.

I know you said you tried gap, but have you tried all three of their new cuts? They now have three levels of "curvyness" to eliminate the waist-gape. I'm a huge fan of parassucos. They're expensive, but if there is an actual parasuco store near you, they always have a 50% off rack, full of really nice jeans.
For Levi's I like 501, they tend to favour the thin-legged, so if you don't have thin legs, they may not fit well. |

Is everyone wearing jeans and running shoes, or just some of the staff? Business casual has once again declined to said jeans and many offices are now starting to require dress pants etc. I worked in corporate finance and always wore suits, regardless of what other people wore. Basically you need to wear what suits you. I don't wear jeans, never have. You could dress me in $5,000 worth of expensive Martha Stewart type of casual and I would look as if I had paid $50 for the whole ensemble. I do not follow fashion either - if best mini length on you is 2 inches above your ankles, so be it. Figure I am in fashion about every 50 years - 1930s styles suit me - I have that look. Obviously this fall, as with most other seasons, I am out to lunch. But back to your jeans. As someone said, Levi's - but I bought my husband a pair a few months ago and frankly when he had them on the other day, I seriously thought they were the pair I had bought him 2 years ago they looked that worn - and he does not wear them to work. I got him some at Roots that were on sale - not a bad fit - he is nearly 57 so we go with the looser fit otherwise he would look as if he were trying to look younger, while making himself only look older. Finally, in desperation we did get him a pair of 7s which fit perfectly - size 34. Expensive of course - and when his office does allow jeans - Fridays - he wears them with a blazer and Oxford shirt. PLAN B and this is what I have done for years being someone who suits only plain clothing - but with flare - and nothing is more expensive than this - is I shop Consignment. But of course you need to know your pricing. I have seen people pay $70 for a second hand Mr. Leonard blouse - good condition at 2 shops I frequent, whereas I have paid $50 for heavy Italian silk in a classic style - regrettably such fabric no longer exists. But there are jeans galore and many hardly worn. There are many people with money who buy clothing and never wear it, or wear it once and then sell it to consignment shops. I have seen top quality jeans selling for Levi prices. I have even bought brand new shoes, neve worn - Manolo's for heaven's sake at less than one would pay for a pair of shoes at The Bay. Fitting in at the office is nice of course, but not if you are not comfortable in what you are wearing - and of course always dress a level up.

I like strech jeans myself, once I tried a pair on, i wouldn't go back.
The only non-strech jeans I could find that were a comfy fit were Nevada Jeans from Sears. and BTW: you don't need a flair just because you don't want a taper. Straight Legged jeans look good on everyone. Flares can cut the line of your leg and make you look shorter than you are. |

I am a straight legged or boot cut kind of girl. Don't like to have to play around to get my feet out of my jeans.

because I have large hips, I need to flare to make then look smaller. With straight leg my hips look bigger. Even boot cut is too straight sometimes. I also have long legs and a short torso, so I need the low cut to make my torso look longer. Most regular jeans (and any pants for that matter) are usually too short as well. I bought a pair of the wrinkle free/stain free khakis for work last year (my old job) at old navy, and got the "long" version (as they have short, regular, and long styles) and even with a pair of heals, they barely look long enough. My best friend is 5'10" and I'm 5'7", yet our legs are the same length and our hips are at the same place, that's how much shorter my torso is (probably due to scoliosis which I have, I lost an inch or so).
As for feeling comfortable in jeans, I would rather wear jeans ALL THE TIME then dress pants or dress clothes ever. I hate business clothes and such. CAN'T STAND THEM. I love that I can be casual at work. Most of the people there wear jeans, sweats, shorts, tshirts, cargo pants, skater pants, running shoes, etc. Even the owner and managers most of the time (they will dress up if they are seeing clients, etc, but not usually. I am also a firm beleiver that a nice pair of jeans, with a blouse and nice shoes can look nicer than some of the dress clothes out there right now. I don't like stretch jeans because I don't like how tight they are on my thighs. I like it a little loose around my thighs and knees. Plus, they get all out of shape after a few washes and don't last long.

Maybe try the men's department. There was a show on TV - the hosts were the British Ladies of What Not to Wear - definitely NOT the CDN version. The tried a bazillion jean types on a woman with what appears to be your figure type and ended up buying her "7s" from the men's department. Expensive though. I think you just need to keep trying. Some people have 10 pairs that look "okay" and others 2 that look great. The ladies in Italy wear nice looking jeans with nice blouses, scarves, shoes etc. - hair nicely done with tasteful makeup - and look so nice! I can't pull that off. For me nothing suits more than a long coat dress, cut on the bias - or a long bias cut skirt. I am 5' 7" but have short legs with a long waist - so opposite problem to you - and all of my weight is carried on the bottom so appear thinner than I am. In jeans I look a good 15 lbs. heavier and they never fit right anyway around my waist. I still think that if you can get to a good consignment shop and don't care about buying used clothing, that might be the ticket. I am not able to find the items I could a few years ago - styles have changed, quality etc. and I basically suit black, navy and khaki green - so it is hard - and I need that extra length. The 2 stores I have frequented for over 10 years are on Mt. Pleasant in Toronto - right across the street from each other. Purses are always a good buy at these stores as well - especially those never used.

I only know one conseignment shop...on Merton, or at least it used to be, can't remember the name though. But it was mostly older styles, nothing newer. But with gas prices and such now, I may as well just buy ones full price here. I'm looking to spendin $30 to $50 max, so I can buy two pairs (that's all the $$ I have right now for it...but my bday is in two weeks, and my mom gives cash, and I asked my sisters for cash or store gift certificates so I may have more to work with). a
Isn't Winners consignment? I don't mind winners, but it's so large and it makes me dizzy because there are so many peices to go through as usually they only have a few of each one, and they come from 100's of stores, so there is SOOOO much.

Winners is just low-priced name brands, not conseignment.
Have you tried American Eagle? Their Jeans are pretty cheap. Three suggestions for "hippier" jeans are: The Limited "Cassidy" Jean, Lee Jeans "One True Fit" and Gap "Curvy, Low rise" |

I only get my jeans at Victoria's secret. I hate shopping and their jeans ROCK and they're not more expensive than anything you get here. The shipping is a bugger, but it's worth it.
Here: Victoria's Secret If you have big hips, you need wide leg jeans with a "wide waist band". It cuts down the amount of hip (and hiney) you have. JMO... I have some great ones but they were discontinued.. You get an idea of the waist band if you look at these: Easy Jean But they don't have a** pockets, which bugs me... (there's a sale section too, that has stuff cheaper- sometimes the same stuff that's regular price on the website) |

Bluenotes jeans are pretty good and only cost about 49 dollars each. I've had many successful Bluenotes jean purchases.
I've also enjoyed my cheap Lee jeans from The Bay. They sell them for 39.99 and sometimes, like when I bought them, for 19.99. They come in three shades, different lengths and waist sizes. |

I could never wear jeans to work. (Unless I was on call and I happened to be out somewhere and had to rush in). I agree with Snow Dancer- were what your comfortable with if there is no particular dress code.
But I am not a fashion maven either and do think some of the casual clothes can look just as nice as a business suit. Did you try Reitman's or Suzy Shier? They have some nice pant suits. What about cords? They are in style at the moment. And are very casual! |

I just have to say that everything I have ever gotten from Suzy Shier shrinks more and more and more each time I wash it. My BF kept saying, "Suuuuure they are" and then I showed him a "regular" tank top that barely covered the area that even Britney Spears covers up.

Suzy Shier is really crappy. It is owned by the same company as a couple of other stores, and any clothing that doesn't meet the inspections for those stores is sent to SS to be sold.

There were also false advertising lawsuits. Their sales are not really sales- they got a huge fine for that a few years ago.

Raingirl, didn't you say you lived in Brampton area? If that's the case, get yer hiney on over to Sears Liquidation on Queen Street! There's a Sears outlet at hwy 410 and Queen, and just west of there (east of Hansen road) is the Sears liquidation (south side of Queen between Rutherford road and Hansen road). Being a plus size myself, I've never had anything but luck there, their selection is huge, and I've yet to pay more than $20 for anything!

Try Old Navy. I alway shop there because it is cheap. Jeans are about $35 and come in every size and fit. I think just about anyone can find a pair that fits good, and you can't argue with the price
