Black Fly Repellent
Ethel's b/f's dog Riley a Dutch Shepherd gets terrible black fly bits in his ears that drive him crazy, poor pooch
I told Ethel to wipe them with Skin So Soft to deter the little pests from biting. What I am wondering is, could this be toxic if licked by either Iggy or his cat?...Or does anyone have any suggestions on what might work better. |

I bought some bug spray at the pet supply store (Pet Valu) last year, it was citronella based and worked well. I think it was called Muskoka Woods or something like that? Pet friendly and smelled pretty good too!

Thanks Mollywog, right now the things are just rampant around here. This morning I was outside talking to someone and there must have been between 20-30 buzzing around our heads

I think another member (frenchy?) said that a cap of apple cider vinegar in the drinking water helps keep buggies away ?
Edit: Here is the thread I was talking about but it was for mosqitos , I think it would be ok for Black Flies though http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread....+cider+vinegar

I wouldn't use the Skin-So-Soft as it contains BHT ....

I've even heard that you can dab ACV on their ears as a repellent or also Vaseline is supposed to keep them away as well. |

He's been scratching, so I think that by putting ACV on right now might give him the owies.
The cat doesn't bother with Riley much, and Iggy might give him the passing lick, you think that the SSS could be that bad with the odd lick here and there? |

I also have heard that Eucalyptus & Peppermint oil mixed with water in a spray bottle helps with bugs and fleas..
don't know if it works cause I have never tried it.

Our dogs get bit up on their bellies and legs the worst. So far, grapefruit oil seems to work the best for repellents, but it's hard to apply (we have to get it right from fresh grapefruit rind...I've never seen the oil bottled ) and it only lasts for 20 minutes or so until the volatile components evaporate
Other than that, the Pack prefers mud as a protection method We have three weeks every spring that are just miserable due to black flies...so we're always looking for new solutions.

I've never heard of that Breeze, I wrote it down.
Didn't check out the SSS doodah yet, the guys wanted out and I wanted to be downstairs. OK Hazel, I will get Ethel to slather Riley's ears in mud I'm sure they will want something easy peasy, so maybe the vaseline will be the best bet for now.. |

I wipe Brina's coat, especially her snout and ears with a new bounce sheet (for the dryer) and then tuck it into her collar (tied in a knot) it works pretty good!

Another good tip Melinda, does it have to be Bounce or any fabric softener sheet?....This one sounds real easy and won't leave a gooey mess.

not sure about any other brands, I've always used bounce for her *L* but I use cheapy ones for my drying!!
I keep them by my back door for when its raining also, once I dry her off I run the sheet down her back , no stinky dog odor...well....almost none *L* just don't smell her feet |

I would tie it on the collar as long as I could supervise but wouldn't wipe the fur with them in case of ingestion. I know it would probably take alot but I'm just paranoid that way.

Not for one nanosecond would I ever doubt that you do Hazel...I'm sure you have some kind of ritual that goes with it to boot

You bet! And if you ever come to visit, I'll teach it to you. Just come in summer, though--cuz in summer we can kiss the toads...in winter, cuz the toads are estivating, we replace that part of the ritual with rubbing butter under madame hazel's left...well...lets just say that that part would be a bit embarassing to teach... So come in summer!
