My bird feeder visitor

This fella has been hanging around my feeder lately. I love watching him but I am not crazy about why he is there. The birds are mostly smart enough to stay away when he is there but I'm sure he has had a few meals. I see the feathers.

WOW, he is stunning though.

Yes it is sad the reason he is there. Poor birdies.

I *think* it may be a Redtail Hawk but I'm not entirely sure. It hangs around most of the year but not normally this close. I usually see it by our pine trees across the length of a field.
I love watching them fly. They are magnificent. I just wish he would feed on mice more than other birds.

Thanks Winston! That makes sense. He isn't a huge bird. I really suck at identifying birds.
He doesn't seem in a hurry to migrate to warmer climates. I noticed the turkey vultures all took off a few weeks ago. One day they were here, next day gone.

Yes,they are starting to come here too,I hardly see any in the summer, but as soon as it gets colder, they are here every day.
They are very beautiful...my Pigeons and other birds don't agree
I too see feathers around,I have a smaller Hawk and a larger one coming, mostly they go for the Pigeons but it's nature, they all have to eat to survive.

Winston,I did not think Hawks migrated at all,I see quiet a few all winter, but I guess it's like the Robins and Gracklers, some stick around and take their chances.

14+ he is beautiful. The circle of life huh, it sucks to be the prey. I would think it more uncommon that he would show himself so openly at the birdfeeder. The prey birds aren't dumb enough to come and eat with him sitting there! Hubby had a little bird fly into our living room window last Friday. He went out and picked it up and saw a hawk of some sort on our fence. He figures it was chasing the little guy. The hawk left when hubby picked up the little bird. He brought it in the house and stroked it for about an hour, but it didn't survive. Although it did manage to poop on my TV stand before it died...

DD they are actually more common than you may think! Circle of life..sad but so true! 14+ where you are I am sure there are many...I had to take a second look for a second because with the yellow feet I thought it was am immature peregrine falcon.

14+ there is a falcon that was fitted with a transmitter about 3 yrs ago. Her name is Quest and she spends alot of time out your way. Her actually nest site is beleived to be in the Port Hope area but she frequents the area your in every so often. She has an obvious Antenna on her back but it never seems to have hampered the falcon in any way.

Winston, forgive my ignorance, but if a falcon or hawk have yellow feet(which most of the ones I've seen here have)does it mean they are juvenile?

No Chico...it usually is the feathers and the coloring...immature falcons are a browny color and then they turn to a slate gray for example.

Also the Bald eagle doesnt get the white head until about I think 2-3 yrs old....until then they are all brown...

I could be wrong but I think most Hawks / Rapters have yellow feet...

We watched a juvie red-tail hawk chase a squirrel around the bole of an oak tree one summer, chico. It was quite entertaining, although I'm sure the hawk didn't think so. The squirrel was having no trouble staying just out of reach, pausing once in a while to laugh at the silly youngster!

Winston, I'm thinking 14+'s hawk is too tall and the center of gravity is too high to be a Cooper's. I'm thinking it could be a Sharp-shinned. They look very similar but the sharp-shinned is smaller with a flat end of the tail (the Cooper's is rounded). Whaddya think, 14+? Was it smaller or about the same size as a crow?

Both types of hawks are bird-specialists, so either of them will get a rise (so to speak) out of any smaller birds in your yard when the hawk happens to be there.

Thank you Winston for that info. We see a lot of hawks flying around here. Sometimes they can be identified. Others not. This fella I am almost positive lives in the pine trees at the far end of our property. I see him quite often perched up high on a telephone pole watching and waiting. He/she just recently started coming up to the bird feeder.
He is quite a bit larger than a crow hazel. We have tons of them around this area too. Probably if they sat side by side the hawk would be bigger by about 1/3.

We have one of these come into our yard once in a while too. All of a sudden all the birds will scatter and he'll come swooping in and sit in our crab apple tree.

They are beautiful to watch, but he did get a mourning dove one day last winter and ate it in our backyard. Poor birdy..

Hmmm...of the two, then, it would have to be a Cooper's...but even Cooper's are usually a little smaller than a crow. Sure doesn't look like the coloration of a goshawk, though, so must be a Cooper's.

Is it possible he is just a large specimen? I know next to nothing about birds except I like watching them. Most times it's hard for me to identify the turkey vultures from a hawk when they are both gliding high up.

Hazel I am not sure now??? They are indeed very close...

Here is pic of a sharp shinned from my identification site and man they are close...if the pic was a tad closer we may know for sure! anyway here is the pic of a sharp shinned!Hazel do you know if the coopers hawk has a yellow color on the beak? I noticed in 14+ pic there is no yellow but on this sample pic there is yellow in the beak??

I think I can see a yellowish span of beak in all the pics, Winston--they just don't show up as bright yellow till you get close, but they're all light base with a black tip. If it's as big as or bigger than a crow, though, it wouldn't be a sharp-shinned. They're smaller than Cooper's hawks, and Cooper's hawks are just a tad smaller on average than a crow.
