Pond season coming up

I too love ponds and have seen some great looking ones. Just wanted to post about the mesh netting that people buy to over their ponds, etc. If you need to cover your pond, etc, please find a alternative rather then netting. In the past, I have seen wildlife become caught in the netting. Most I have gotten out in time and have been able to be released, but some have been too injured. I have had birds, expecially snakes, fish, etc that have been caught in the mesh netting.

I don't net my pond, never have never will. Those of us who have herons visit usually do that so the herons can't eat our fish. If you build a pond properly with steep sides and not gradually sloped, you don't have to worry about the herons wading on in. Raising the pond by a foot or two above ground level also helps. There are other deterents out there, like the water scarecrow that shoots water at anything approaching the pond. I have a friend that uses that for the herons that visit her pond.
