Good day, I am new in your community. I am a long time dog owner, and currently own Barney Rubble who is an 19 month old grey, minature poodle. Of course he is smart agile and wonderful puppy. He has been on Inova small bites since 3 months, and I have noticed quite a bit of tartar on his teeth. I have been brushing a scraping but he is not comfortable with me doing it. The vet wants $400 minimum and they have to anextitize him. Is it the dog food??

More likely it's just genetics. Our dogs are all on Innova adult. They're all English Setters. I brush their teeth daily. Some have pearly white teeth; some have tarter but no gingivitis and require cleaning every few years; one has bad enough teeth that she requires annual cleaning.
I've heard some people say that a raw diet that includes bones keeps the teeth whiter and in better shape, but I've seen dogs on that diet that also have bad teeth. So I'm guessing it has a lot more to do with genetics than with diet...but of course I've never done a scientific investigation

My goodness 400. to get your dogs teeth cleanned? You get your dogs teeth cleanned every year hazelrun? I hope your vet isn't charging 400 a go.. I"m starting to get stressed about affording my dog.

We just scheduled Den-Den for his first cleaning. He hasn't needed it before. He's also a miniature poodle, but is 10 years old. My vet charges about $200 and that includes the bloodwork because he's older. Maybe it is just genetics, or maybe luck. Den-Den eats canned food. All my previous poodles ate dry food and self-fed. Never a problem. But now that we have Corky, having the dry food out just creates a problem with Den-Den wanting to wolf it down to keep Corky from getting it. Corky is a toy poodle, 5 years old. Hasn't needed teeth cleaning yet. $400 seems rather excessive for such a young dog.
