very sad...

Years ago, this happened to a newlywed friend of mine when he was trying to save his puppy on the Thames River near Woodstock. Both Mark and the puppy perished unfortunately. leaving a wife and small newborn behind......I am feeling a little veclempt(?) right now, having read this article. A lot of sad memories have just hit me.....so sad and so sorry......

Soon as I saw the word Ottawa I knew It was ice. How sad.

Many times when a human dies trying to save an animal in icy water the human dies and the pet survives.

Still I’m pretty sure I’d be in there too. Sad.

Very true...most dogs are amazing swimmers and it seems much less susceptible to hypothermia.

There was another boy yesterday who fell down a part of a cliff after he tried to pull his dog back up in Vancouver. They were rescued safely.

I saved Keeper from an icy demise after she ran out of my sight over a hill on the pasturelands we frequent and went through the ice of a slough. She had ignored my calls to stop, all in the spirit of exploration and bad training. I ran to catch up knowing the danger was there but she'd already gone through.

While its true I did go out on the ice to retrieve her I was also confident, knowing the body of water, that I wouldn't plummet over my head if I went through . . . . I was basically risking a good soaking in sub zero temperatures a mile from any building.

Keeper, however, was definitely unable to touch bottom and unable to get out, hanging onto the ice by her front paws.

Keeper's version of events . . . .

I never let them go on frozen river ice.

Diving in after Hunter is something definitely won't do. Not because I don't love him, it's just that...well....I can't swim and have little to no chance of saving myself let alone save him. But then again, I don't live within running distance to any bodies of water
