Looking...
Hi everyone,
I'm new to this board but I have been lurking the board for the past few days. Right now I'm in the process of purchasing a Jack Russell. Yes i know exactly what i'm getting myself into which is exactly why I chose that breed . I've been searching the internet to find a breeder and those that I have had contact with I'm not really impressed on how they are responding to my emails. It's as if they're tryign to make me feel inadequate because I "..shouldn't be choosing a JRT as a first time dog owner". History: I've never had a dog, but I've been doing research for the past 6 - 8 months on the type of dog I would like. My husband and I currently live in an apartment and we're moving into our house end of June; hence my search for a breeder now. Now I could go to a pet store and purchase one in the window but I refuse to support a puppy mill. I feel bad because you have these helpless animals staring at you, but I can't bring myself to support the reason why they are in the window. So here I am on my search. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a good and nice JR breeder. Any help would be grateful . I live in the Toronto area, but I'm more than willing to drive 3 hours to pick up a family member. |

If you are dead set on a purebred from a breeder, I would say be patient, phone breeders, go to events, keep emailing (not with interest of a litter, just for information about bloodlines and how they conduct the breeding program) and take this time to research your breed (even if you feel you are well versed, keep on researching).
Are you opposed to shipping? You will llikely have more luck with breeders if you expand to other countries and areas of canada. Don't limit yourself to location. The right dog could be 2 hours away...or 10. My advice to you is to try to get involved with the JRT community. Do not limit yourself to a time span, you don't need a puppy the moment you are able to own one. If you give yourself a time span, you will rush and that's the last thing you want to do! I hope that helps and I wish you the best of luck with everything! Welcome to the board btw!

cdas,I think rescuing a JRT would be a great idea,my son has a JRT,but her puppy-stage was a horror, she chewed and destroyed everything she could, awfully cute though.
Now at about nine she is a wonderful dog, smart as a whip. It seems to me you have really researched the breed and know what they are all about. I love my grand-doggy,she's great with both cats and other dogs. Good luck!!

Hello and welcome to Pets.ca!
Where exactly in Canada are you located? This will help determine whether I would be of any help to you. I myself am from Vancouver, BC.

Sorry, I won't be of any help to you. However I do suggest trying your local shelter or SPCA. Check often as well, just because you go once and don't see what you need or like does not mean that the next day some little dog that fits all your requirements won't come in.
