Exclamation Help! Dog can't walk for some reason

I have a 9 year old pitbull terrier whom has done something to his back/hind quarters. At first he seemed really stiff and was walking slowly. We took him in and the vet seemed to think he tweaked a disc or just threw out his back. He gave him a shot of rimadyl and some previcox pills (Pain killers). Well, the next day he now can not even walk! He just tries to slide around by pulling his hind legs. One leg appears ok, while the other is totally paralyzed. We dropped him off today at the vet and are awaiting the results of X-Rays.

Now he does have a lipoma on his one good back leg, but the vet seems to think it it the non-invasive type and has nothing to do with his current problems. Does anyone have any possible insight/experience with this?

I'll update when I hear back from the vet.

tks

Thank you

I'm still waiting to hear from the vet as they had to sedate him first in order to get the x-rays done.

I also wanted to throw out there that he has no problem wagging his tail and honestly does not seem to be in terrible pain when he tries to move. But, pitbulls have an incredible tolerance for pain, so that's not really too helpful.

Ok, so, he has bone spurs in is vertabrae and it is possible he has a pinched nerve. Basically the vet says we need to keep him calm and drugged up for a few days and hope he improves. If not we either have to go to a specialist for surgery or possibly even euthanize him . Any insights would be deeply appreciated.

Help! Dog can't walk for some reason

I'm sorry to hear about your baby. Mine, too, has a pinched nerve and had real trouble walking - feet criss-crossed, gait wobbly, would fall down if his balance wasn't perfect. My vet put him on Metacam (based on his weight) and he's doing good. He has his bad days, but most are pretty good. Boy, I would get another opinion if the only two options are surgery and putting him to sleep. That sounds pretty drastic. Be careful, though, of Rimadyl - I stayed clear of it because of all the deaths directly attributed to it. Good luck and see if your vet would consider Metacam. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Well, I decided to go with surgery after talking with a friend familar with the particular surgical center we were referred to. We took him in and the surgical center's diagnosis was a torn/ herniated disc in has back applying pressure to his spine. We then decided to move forward with a CT and/or myogram and surgery if that indeed was the cause of his problems. Well, they ended up finding 2 torn discs and succesfully cleaned up the areas and relieved the pressure. He came home today and can now stand up on his own but needs help walking by using a sling. They think he will make a full recovery, but only time will tell. However, they said he is doing VERY well, so I'm quite hopeful. I'm leaving out many details, but I could type a book if I included everything.

Again, thank you to everyone for your help and if anyone is unfortunate enough to have a pet with a similar condition, let me know as I now feel like I'm semi-pro at this topic.

good for you for not giving up on your boy. surgery, particularily at a referral center is not cheap, but i found the service/resources top notch. did a great job on my boy and i slept at night while he was under their care, knowing they were staffed with knowledgeable, competent people all night.
hope he continues to improve.

Glad to hear your boy came through his operation okay and it's always good to hear that the vet says he's doing very well. Did he/she say how long for a full recovery?

Thanks for the thoughts everyone.

They said around 6-8 weeks, although they said he would probably be walking ok on his own around 2 weeks. He has already shown some improvement today over yesterday. The 6-8 weeks is basically how long we need to keep him from running around on his own as he could re-injure himself. Basically, scar tissue will fill in the gap the soft disc material that was removed filled in between the vertabrae. Once that's taken place (6-8 wks) he should be good to go.

Glad to hear that he's improving. I guess it's going to be a long 6-8 weeks though.

JGB,great news, thank's for going all out for your pooch,we would love to see a pic of him
I have often wondered how you possibly keep a dog still,if he feels he wants to get up and run unless he's in a lot of pain..

Here's a pic of him! We have built a pen for him (8x10 feet) to keep him from running around.

Hope he's feeling better and has a complete recovery. It's good to see responsible owners who will go that extra mile for their fur-kid!

He's such a handsome boy. Give him a smooch from us.

Pit bulls some in nearly every colour, and b/w is quite common.

Glad to hear your baby is getting better! Prayers for a quick and full recovery!

I do want to commend you for spending that kind of money on a 9 year old dog! Many people would have opted for euthanasia as it is much cheaper. That's wonderful what you have done PLUS building the pen!!! Fella sure is lucky to have you as an owner !!!
