peanut butter
Mickey my 1 year old Bichon/shih tzu cross friend had a Kong filled with peanut butter today while we were out. When we got home he had diaherra and had vomitted. Is it possible that the peanut butter would make him ill? He is now sleeping and is showing no interest in anyone or anything.

I would keep an eye on him. I've not heard of a dog reacting to peanut butter but doesn't mean that he couldn't be sensitive to it.. I don't like the stuff myself but that's because I don't eat it myself.. I normally stuff with cheese whiz.. perhaps try that next time? however, if he doesn't improve a vet visit may be necessary.. Poor little guy...

Dogs can have allergies to peanuts just as humans can. Has he ever had peanut butter before? If so, did he have any trouble with it then?
Regardless, it sounds like a visit to the vet is in order. Diarrhea combined with vomiting can result in dangerous, sometimes fatal, dehydration. If your dog is behaving abnormally a vet visit is always a good idea. If there is no vet open right now, phoning a clinic with an on-call vet would be a good idea. Good luck! I hope your little friend is better soon!

If this is the first time Mickey has had peanut butter then that may be why he reacted to it. I have never "filled" a kong with peanut butter for my dogs....I have only used it to plug the hole end when I fill it with something "liquidy".
I hope Mickey is okay. If he is not eating, drinking, peeing and pooping normally by tomorrow then I would take him to the vet. Good luck and keep us posted. |

I have never had a problem giving my dogs peanut butter, but I would definitely check it out with the Vet.
Both my guys get some of hubby's toast and peanut butter every morning and Buster gets about 1 tablespoon of PB in his kong when he is crated (also stuffed with a couple of treats or a piece of apple). Good luck!

I would be careful with the amount given as it is quite fattening and can add lots of calories that are not needed.

Mickey is drinking and has stopped throwing up today. He is much more active as well. Had a long night waking every hour to check on him. He sleeps by my head when he is not feeling well. About 3 am I heard him drinking and then settled down on the floor by our bed so I knew we were on the road to recovery. I will talk to the vet on Tuesday and have him checked out. Thanks for all your advise and concern.

I'm glad to hear he's better! Good for Mickey! And good for mom! Hoping for a great report from the vet on Tuesday!
