Male or female for Twiggy?

Hi Everyone,

Twiggy is a 10 year old female cat (adopted claw less...and now she has no teeth due to past infections) that gets along with all cats - in a few months we will be looking for a new friend her.

I forget if there is a difference or preference for adopting male or female cats based on the sex of the current cat.

One weird thing about Twiggy is that even though she has been spayed - she goes through regular periods where she exhibits sexual behaviours (rubbing, getting into a mounting positions etc.). She strictly indoors though - Leary of the outside.

Because of this we were thinking adopting a female cat might be best........

any thoughts?

many thx!

Having no experience with this sort of thing, I've got no advice for you--but I'd be curious to hear what you decide, what your thought process is, and how it turns out! I'm still toying with the idea of eventually getting JD a playmate, once he's got me trained up to be a little more conversant in "cat"... Well, and once we get the extra living space set up.

Would Twiggy be getting another hairless as a buddy? Young cat or older? Can't wait to meet the newbie!

Thx! - Not sure about age and sex but Carmy is leaning toward another baldie. They come up in the rescues here from time to time.

Hey Marko
So glad to hear that you are looking I think I would lean towards another baldie as well. I tend to think certain breeds understand each other in some ways. Having said that if you do the proper intros I dont see it being too big of a deal but sometimes it does...depending on each cat.
No rush in the intros and see how it goes.

Most cats go by smell so the first thing I would do is get some baby powder and rub it in your hands and then on each of them so they smell the same or you can put a dab of vanilla under their chin. It sounds crazy but it is so true it works.
When I had Tabitha and Bomber, if I took one to the vet while the other stayed home, we always had a fight when they returned because they smell different and they smell everything from the vets office.

Best of luck whatever you decide......

How do you decide which cat will like costumes and pictures..what do you look for....

I can see the disclaimer now....kitty must be able to dress up and enjoy being in regular photo shoots!! other I can return them at any time....he he he

just kiddin

Can't really offer much more advice than what has been offered. I've used the "safe room" method and found it to help alleviate the stress in the animals, when introducing a new animal to the house.

Regards the "weird" thing with Twiggy, we had a similar situation with our late Shadow and Missy. Went on for 12 years, where at least once a day Shadow would take up the breeding position and this kept up till about 2 or 3 months before we had to part with Missy. So maybe it's not all that unusual, it's just things that happen that we don't understand.
