Thyroid Problems!

Okay I have a doctors appointment on Friday at 12:00 p.m. I have a really fast pulse but normal or low blood pressure. I have been reading on the internet and talking with my sister in law, who has a hypothyroid problem, and it looks like to me that it might be a thyroid problem. I have symptons or hypo and hyper but I think I would lean more toward hyperthyroid but I am not sure. Just wanted to see if anyone else had this problem and could give me some tips, etc. They will check my heart and blood pressure and order blood work. So we will go from there. Just wanted to see what you all thought.

I have a slow metabolism - always have. EXCEPT at the age of 47, my right thyroid went hyper which resulted in considerable weight loss, very swollen eyes and extreme cystic acne and my already thick, coarse, dry hair became coarser. First test was for diabetes since it runs in the family but not the case. Doctor checked thyroid and sure enough blood tests came back positive. So I had to report to a hosptal lab for 2 mornings in a row - something was given to me on day one - and checked on day 2. By this time it was possible to feel the swelling on the right side. During all of this my blood pressure remained perfect as always - go figure - must be all those dogs I have had - and I did not experience difficulty breathing. I did see a specialist and thyroid was checked to ensure a malignancy was not present. I did not go on medication. I am allergic to so many things that the doctor said to wait and see how things played out - but to let him know immediately if breathing became an issue. They expected it might be a temporary condition that would eventually right itself. It did - 2 YEARS LATER. I expect that your doctor will do as mine did - take an initial blood test and wait for the results. If they show a potential thryoid disorder you will then be given the further tests to determine level of disorder. Hopefully if it is your thyroid your problem will correct itself as mine did - and hopefully sooner than in 2 years. The hardest thing for me to deal with was my skin and the comments from people. I am now about to turn 55 and am concerned that hormonal activity will cause similar symptoms. Even though I am not as yet in menopause, one thing I do know is exactly when my testosterone and estrogen levels fell - during the 2 year thyroid period. Best of luck at your doctors. Try not to diagnose yourself over the Internet. I know it is tough to resist the temptation. In my case I would have been looking at everything to do with diabetes and completing missing the real issue.

Thanks, I will try not to. Here are some of my symptons some match hyper and some match hypo so I am not sure.

1. Rapid weight gain (which is uncommon in hyper but 10% of all women do gain weight fast)

2. Irregular periods (has been this way all my life) (lite cycles) (hyper)

3. Tired alot of the time. (hypo and hyper)

4. Fast pulse and heart beat (hyper)

5. Feet and hands cold all the time (which is hypo not hyper)

So I am not sure but sounds kind of like it. I do not want to say what I do or do not have. Just wanted to see what you all thought. Thanks again for your help Snow Dancer!

Actually, many of your symptoms describe life as usual for me! My hands and feet are always freezing (I do like it warm - no sun though); I gain weight on the bottom only - very fast; I have a prolapse valve so do get the sudden rapid heartbeat - but one in 8 women have it - no big deal and no meds required; I am an insomniac so of course am always tired - sleep medications of any sort, prescription or OTC wake me up. I don't drink coffee so it is not caffeine - it is just me. Your condition does sound like you could be leading either way - hypo or hyper - or be developing same condition I had - hypo on one side and hyper on the other. Only benefit of the hyper was the amount I could eat - the rest definitely not. Hope all works out for you - might turn out just to be something really simple. Re being tired, don't be surprised if you end up be told to take a really nasty Iron supplement that you have to ask the pharmacist to get for you from behind the counter. My blood is now good, but I can't give up the iron - I asked. HUGE capsules. Palafer by brand for me.

Oh Snow Dancer I hate taking large pills. Wait I hate taking pills at all. LOL I will let you know what they say Friday. I hope it is something that can be fixed easily. I know that thyroid can make it hard to get pregnant and you can misscarry. I know we misscarried once already so we will se what happens. I know what you mean I have symtons of both. LOL I said my luck though if I am hyper they say most woman are super little (weight wise) I would get in that 10% that gains weight.

Hi Princess, good luck at the doctor visit. I know.. its extremely tough to keep from the old online diagnosis..lol. This feature of being able to research eveything is really a double-edged sword in some cases..
The symptoms you describe could be from so many things, really. I do have to say... you are very young to develop a thyroid problem, - but of course it could be.

I was diagnosed as hyperthyroid some years ago. My heart was racing, even when I woke up. My cycle was completely off-kilter, I remained rail-thin while eating everything - my system was on "over-drive". A specialist confirmed this with indepth testing and I began a one-year treatment on meds. It didnt alter it enough. I did another six months with pill treatment, and ultimately had to opt for the drastic and permanent measure - the iodine treatment.
I now take one pill every day which has keeps my thryoid function normal and stabilized, and yearly checks monitor it.
Of course, some weight gain followed at first. I soon realized I simply couldnt eat as I had when my metabolism was in high gear.

Let us know what the outcome is, Princess, best wishes to you!

LOL, Princess.. yes that sounds a bit vague doesnt it... if you dont know what it is.
This treatment is a radioactive iodine drink that permanently destroys your thyroid function. This is then managed by taking one pill a day - tiny, inexpensive pills with really no adverse side affects. But - you must take them forever. There is no recourse for that.

As you I'm sure know, the thyroid function is considered the "regulator guage" for your whole system. When its out of whack, other treatments can usually get it corrected.
But sometimes the body simply cannot do this - your thryoid function will continue to fluctuate...and can present a serious health risk over time. This measure effectively puts the "meter" at zero... and you control the "level".. with a synthetic thryoid supplement.
Because this is permanently disabling a natural bodily function, it would only be considered when all other treatments had been pursued without success
Though I was "very" hesitant, it has worked to stabilize this condition.
I've not had one instance of irregular thyroid activity in fifteen years.

OMG I,m sitting here crying!! I have had all these symptoms (and almost every one listed on a thyroid problem website) My doctor has been telling me for years there is nothing wrong with me (has never tested me for anything) and told me my problems are called LIFE!!
I am making an appointment right now!! I can't believe I have spent so many years thinking this was all in my head!!

Thank you so much Princess, you are a life saver

happycats you should get a new doctor.

or at least a second opinion, in everyday life healthy people dont get heart palpitations or shortness of breath

Happycats that is not normal everyday life. I would order blood work and if they refuse get a new doctor. Sounds like something is wrong.

Sorry I don't have a thyroid prob. but that doesn't sound right to me happycats, that isn't normal day life. I'm animic, which is not as bad as a thyroid problem but without my daily iron pills i'd never make it through the day. I'm always cold (iron helps bond oxygen to your blood and oxygen helps your body heat itself), have low blood pressure but i'm not sure if that is caused by the animia, and am often short of breath. anima also cuases severe fatigue in bad cases such as mine. Without iron suppliments I wouldn't be able to do anything. The severe fatigue is what got me to the doctor in the first place. I wish you all luck.

Happycats if you type www.google.com and type in hyperthyroid or hypothyroid it will tell you some more. Some of the symptons are the same some are a little differant I would call your doctor.

Happycats, good luck with this! Insist your doctor do a thorough and complete blood panel. Thyroid, cholestrol, blood sugar - any and all tests that that can help track down the cause.
I am shocked that he hasnt done this already,. and is calling it "life".( nothing)
Surely there must be a reason for all these symptoms- and something to help you.
All medical possiblities need to be ruled out before it can be declared to be not from a physical cause.
Some doctors are far too quick to dismiss symptoms - especially from women. as non-specific, vague complaints that have no merit, no basis for followup.
I'd definitely see doctor another if you dont get satisfaction, Happycats - for your health and for your peace of mind.
It's NOT nothing.. its "something". Something that affects your health deserves to be explored fully.
My best wishes to you.

Me too/ Iodine treatment

Same here as with Shamrock! I was 28 with 3 kids( now 51) when I had to take the Iodine treatment. I'm also taking Levothyroxin on a daily basis for the rest of my life. The only difference is my thyroid still fluctuates and I have blood work done every 3 months. But, it's my fault...I''m really bad at taking my pill every day, and if you miss them, it does really make a difference. The Ioding treatment is painless, they put you on a type of gyger (sp) machine, it takes a "count" then you drink the iodine, and they take another count. The pills are tiny, and very cheap, at least here in Canada. The worst part is the blood test for me, as I have terrible veins, they "roll" or "collapse". It's not uncommon to take 3 or 4 stabs at it Sometimes, they'll take the blood test from my feet which is much more painful, but only when they've tried from both arms a couple of tiimes.

Really hun, although thyroid problems can be serious, if I had to have a serious disease, it would be this one....it's really not that bad if you take your pills every day and keep aware of any changes in you system!

Have a friend...

I have a friend who doesn't even have a thyroid gland anymore. When she was in her mid-20's, the doctors thought she had a brain tumor. They gave her something that was supposed to shrink the size of the tumor temporarily so that they could get a better look at it and that's when they discovered that her hypothalmus gland (at least I think that was the one) went nuts and ate the thyroid! It apparently had engulfed the thyroid gland and destroyed it. She has been on daily meds for the condition since then, and the only time she has any problems is when they decide to change her dosage. I think she goes in for blood tests a couple of times a year. I'll be thinking about both of you! Good Luck!

I have heart palpitations too. I thought it was stress but now I'm done school and I still have them. It's a little scary...

Anyone noticed that when they put out the list of top sold pharmaceuticals, Quebec has more thyroid issues than other provinces? I thought about it and everything we eat crosses provincial borders except for milk. I drink a ton of milk, so it made me wonder....

Okay you all I am back, I went to see the doctor first and my pulse was 151 beats and blood pressure was 126/81 so I was there for about a hour and they are leaning more toward hyperthyroid but he sent me to the hosipital to get all my blood work done. They had three differant people try to get my blood and they could not so I got stuck 7 times . Anyway we are waiting on blood test to get back and we will go from there. The doctor said it would be a guessing game for a little while as far as the treatment. Thank you all for thinking about me I will keep you all posted.

They always have trouble getting blood out of me as well. So they are looking at hyper - somehow I thought they might. Did your doctor tell you whether this will be just the stage 1 test to confirm a thyroid disorder and if so if you will then have to go as I did for 2 mornings in a row to a special clinic at a hospital for testing? Since my condition was diagnosed 7 years ago, procedures may have changed. It was the second stage testing that indicated it was my right thyroid that had turned hyper. Then of course the reason had to be determined. As I previously posted, my condition eventually "righted" itself and I did not take medication. Hopefully this will be the case with you as well. If not, hopefully medication will be all that is required - it is getting the dose down pat that can be a problem I am told.

I would have fainted for sure. I pay big bucks for blood tests at prestigious clinics because I have invisible veins too. So far I have never been multiple poked. (No matter how many of you say hospitals are the same... These clinics might just have more time and are less in a hurry and can do a better job. They're probably paid more so have more job satisfaction too...)

Good luck with the results..

How was the blood test? How many vials did they take? My doc thinks I have either thyroid problems, or I have reactive hypoglycemia (everything I eat makes me shakey within 20 minutes because my blood sugar drops too fast), or I have both.

I got the blood test request form in January but I haven't done it yet. It's sitting in my purse! My doc is on Maternity leave, and I have been to her replacement before and I don't like her, so I'm waiting for my doc to come back in June.

The part I'm dreading isn't the blood test, but the GTT (glucose tolerance test-the one they use to test diabetes also tests for hypoglycemia). You have to drink super sugar orange sweet water really fast, and sit around for 2 hours. At least I have a few books to read.
