My Dog has Chondrosarcoma bone cancer
Hello My Name is Karen,
i found out two weeks ago that my beloved pet Bella has bone cancer, she is only 17months old, i feel so sorry for her, she had already gone through 2 major operations on both legs for crew reapir and had to have steel plates put in, things were going well, when i discovered she was having trouble putting her leg down, the leg she 1st had done, so i had her checked out, only to be told the horrible news. i've read everyhting on the internet on how best to deal with it and whats was best for her, only to be told from the orthopedic specialist, that amputation, radio, chemo would not work in Bella's case, because of her bad knees and hip displaysia, it would start a whirlwind of other problems, and that we should be looking a pallative care. i know what they are saying is right, she doesnt need anymore pain, but in my heart i feel like i'm letting her down, my little baby, my bella b. i cant watch her die, there must be something i could try and do? if anyone has or is going through the same thing i would love to talk to them. its so hard, i cry most days, i cuddle up with her talk to her and tell her mummy will be with her to the end. look forward to your responses. karen |

Welcome to the board, I wish it could have been under happier circumstances. And she is so young! I don't have any answers for you, just wanted to offer my support. Many people here have been faced with the same decision and it is never easy. Luckily, our pets don't go through the same mental agony, they live in the moment.
Have you got a picture? We love pictures. Last edited by badger; January 10th, 2008 at 02:30 PM. |

omg. I'm so sorry. I'm at work and I'm in tears. I know it's really hard as it would be if it were one of us. You're not letting her down. You're not hiding the cure for cancer in your back pocket. Sometimes there is nothing we can do other than sit back and watch our world fall apart.
I'm so sorry. Just kiss her and hold her until it's time. |

for both you and Bella, this is just so sad  All you can do is make her last days, weeks, months as comfortable and happy as possible for her, and take loads and loads of pictures to look at later, although you will never forget her. Stay strong for her, she doesn't understand your sadness and only feels sad that you are. I know that's not easy, but we're all here for you when you need to have a good cry tht she doesn't see.

Karen, I wish we were welcoming you under better circumstances. I'm so sorry you're going through such a difficult time.
There are people on this board who have had experience with cancer and they'll find your thread and offer some advice. We would love to see pictures of your beautiful Bella. She sounds like a very lucky girl to be loved so much!

OMG,how sad:sad:
I see in your profile she is a Rottie-pup,a beautiful Rottie-pup I have no advice to give,it's just so sad and very serious:sad: I can sense your pain in your post and know, that whatever the outcome, everyone here will support you at this very difficult time. I don't think I need to tell you to love your little girl and give her anything she wants for the time she has left and that you'll also know, when the pain for her becomes too severe and you'll have to let her go. Wish I had a magic wand to make all sick animals well

I'm so sorry for you and your dog. I don't know anything about bone cancer in dogs , but maybe this could help her a bit : http://www.b-naturals.com/Sum1998.php
I do believe treatments are sometimes too much for a dog to put through. There's no sense on making them suffer even more. Cherish every moment you have with her , try to be strong , because she can sense your sadness and be sad herself , she shouldn't because she hasn't done anything wrong and only wants to see you happy because she loves you. My Sam has firbosarcoma . It may sound stupid but , I did explain everything to him , I told him I was extremely sad , but we had to enjoy every bit we have together NOW , we can't waste our time being sad. Because tomorrow will be too late. I know when he will leave me , I will be incredibly sad , my heart is already broken from when I lost my Daisy (cancer again) last year, I don't know if my heart can't take this again. But for now , I am cherishing every moment. I hope you can too. Big hugs to you and her. Last edited by Frenchy; January 10th, 2008 at 09:50 PM. |

I don't have any other advice to offer but wanted to send some hugs and good vibes to you and Bella . Unfortunately sometimes the best thing we can do as pet lovers is to know when to let go .

You most definitely are not letting your pup down. You have done everything you can for her and will now let her live her remaining days with lots of love and support - while trying to hide your emotions from her - very hard to do. Once you have accepted the inevitable, you will find it easier to cope and when the day comes - and you will know it when it does, you will help her to the Bridge. It will be very hard and she will be in your heart forever. I had 10 months with my pup - who was also way too young - and I wouldn't give them up for anything. I am sorry that my guy went through such an invasive surgery, but we all thought he stood a very good chance of a full recovery, but things don't always work out and we were warned at his follow-up what to except. Trouble is you don't know this going in, and we had been through this same procedure successfully with our previous angel. This at least gives me some peace. When the end was very near it sure was hard to keep smiling, but I did. I took him to the vet as if it were a regular visit and she gave him a tranquilizer shot to knock him out in my arms so that he didn't realize what was happening. Of course I did. I think of him every day - but just the happy thoughs and ask myself what Jack would think. I expect your other pup knows that something is very wrong as well - they are so intuitive.

Many pets do very well with cancer - and the chemo does not affect them nearly as much as it does we humans (tho we are getting better at human chemo too)- and I say that as a former cancer patient and as an oncologist.
There is a good site about cats and cancer but I forget the url. If you type in Punky Louis in Google, you may find that site useful. Good luck - I am so sorry this happened. It us alas not unknown to occur due to vaccines, sigh! I know I worried when one of my kittens (YY) had a lump for awhile post her spay but it finally went away. I am sorry yours did did not. This illness can be treated however. Has the vet taken any irresponsibility in helping with the treatment? Merely because you signed an agreement does not mean s/he is legally off the hook.
