diabetes and overdrinking of older dog
My 8 year old rescued yellow Lab mix, Imperial, had started drinking and urinating excessively. I took her to the vet and he said she had diabetes. I read the postings on this and could not find an appropriate answer because they were mainly talking about a young dog. She is taking 21 units of Vetsulin 2 times a day and is still drinking an excessive amount of water. What should I be asking my vet?

How long has the dog been on insulin? Having very high blood sugar makes humans thursty (and hungry for that matter), so I would take a guess that it's the same for dogs. It might be that either the dog has been dehydrated for a while and is just building the fluids back up, or it could be that the dog isn't getting enough insulin. Sometimes, when your blood sugars are very high for a very long time you need to super shock the system with insulin to get it working properly. Once you've gotten the sugars dsown, you drastically decrease the amount of insulin.
(Just in case you're wondering I have type 1 diabetes, what used to be called juvenile diabetes) |

Diabetic Cat
My first cat (Kittybush) was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 13 years old. The way I knew something was wrong was the excessive drinking and urinating. So I took her to the vet and found out about the diabetes which at that time I did not even know cats or dogs could have. It was quite a shock.
I don't know how long your dog has been on insulin but I do know that it takes some time to get everything regulated to the right amount. Also, that you must always keep an eye on the amount of water intake and output because that is a good judge as to whether the insulin level is right. I would call the doctor and tell her/him that the water intake and output is still too much. They can do a screen to find the appropriate amount of insulin and adjust as needed. It is a tough disease to monitor in an animal but my kittbush did very well for several years and diabetes was not the cause of her demise. Good Luck! |

hello....
I have a cat that is diabetic and currently diet controlled... I was able to get here thanks to hometesting to monitor the blood glucose myself, and a good partnership with my vet. I really encourage you to look up in the internet for a canine diabetes board and talk through this with others going through what you are experienceing ... The Feline Diabetes Message Board taught me about hometesting and helped me to understand this disease so I could act proactively for my cat. Please keep us posted...Kimmee

diabetes
We have gone to the vet and are on 21 iu vetsulin twice daily. Imperial has been taken back for check ups to moniter her for the day and her sugar is stable on this dosage after several raises. I asked for her original blood work from April and her glucose was 382. Her NA and CL were each only 1 point under normal. The only thing that concerns me is ther TG (Thyroglobulin) was high 412 normal range 29-291. From what I have looked up on the web this is something to do with the thyroid. Her T4 results were still pending. I think I should go back since they should have gotten those results by now. How concerned should I be? All her CBC results were within normal range. Just the Chem 20 had the icky stuff.

Did you know that both thyroid problems and diabetes have a common link? They are both auto-imune malfunction issues. Both are manageble though so don't worry about it.

Thanks Pet Friendly My husband and Iere really worried last night. I know I had to have my thyroid killed with the radioactive isotope. Now of course I have have hypothyridism. I had no signs of a tumor which when I looked onthe internet this came up. I remember that if I had and even if it were cancerous it was not a major cancer. I just have to get the vet to look and find out what it is.
