Wink New Shih Tzu!!

I have a new addition to my family which consists of 1 son, 1 husband and 2 cats...his name is Muffin and he was born on July 8th,2003. Muffin is the first puppy I have had in a long time, being a *cat person* I thought I would never get used to having a dog. I thought wrong! He is the most adoreable, playful little guy I have ever seen and very smart as well. My son,who is 7, picked him out from a local pet store (I know, not my ideal choice to acquire a pet) and we love him as much as if he has been with us forever! I have yet to find a groomer for him so if any of you are in my area of Ontario (Mississauga), let me know if you have any suggestions!

Hi. To find a groomer I would check with your vet and see if they have anyone they can recommend. You are very correct that a pet store is not a good place to get a pet. Next time you want a dog please contact the Canadian Kennel Club or the national breed club for the breed that you want such as the Canadian Shih Tzu Club these clubs will be able to reffer you to a reputable breeder. Good luck.

Reasoning?

What is your reasoning about not buying a pet from the pet store? I have many but would be interested in knowing what yours are. Muffin was only there for 3 days before we bought him and I know we paid more than we should have but my son wanted him so bad and he is a cutie so we figured we would go ahead and do it. He is the most well behaved of any puppy his age that I have seen and loves everyone. So granted we bought him from a pet store, I think we lucked out.

Only reason I'd but from a pet store is if I prefer a specific type of dog fairly fast.

Although buying from a breeder actually is generally wiser and less costly , and you cansee the bloodline.

Some people refuse to buy from pet store's for fear their supporting puppy mills, and instead adopt from shelter's.

Their are more, and surprisingly frequint instance's where pure bred dogd are availableI myself adopted a pure Shih Tzu from a shelter. I'm very pleased.

Thank you

NO reputable breeder will sell puppies through pet stores. Here's some info on puppy mills - which is where ALL pet store puppies come from.
http://www.stop-puppy-mills.com/

Many people - including myself - will never shop in any store that sells puppies or kittens. There are a number of consumer groups trying to do everything they can to stop this.

Additionally - puppies from pet stores are frequently unsocialised, have numerous health problems, have fake papers, and are MUCH more expensive than a healthy puppy from an ethical breeder.

True story - a friend of mine visited a pet store here in Michigan that was selling Border Collie puppies, "AKC registered." She inquired about the pedigree, and was given an info sheet and copies of the "AKC registration" papers. She emailed an inquiry to the AKC and found that it was all a fake. Unfortunately, little action can be taken. They were selling these poor puppies for an unbelievable $750 each! This was last month.

Pet store puppies come from very questionable backgrounds. They are not all from puppy mills but they do not come from ethical breeders. Most often they come from back yard breeders who don't have a clue what they are doing, they throw two dogs together and there you go. Breeding takes a lot more than that. Before a dog is bred there should be genetic health testing done to make sure they do not carry certain genetic disease that can be passed on to puppies. As others have said often these pet store dogs cost much more than going to a reputable breeder and the reputable breeder would actually give you a health guarantee. For more info visit these sites.... if you have questions you can post back here or e-mail me privately.
