Smooth foot pads?
My Golden's foot pads are very smooth. She actually has trouble sitting up straight on the linoleum in our house, because her front feet slide out. Should I be concerned?

It doesn't sound serious to me. I don't think there is any problem with your dogs foot. How old is the dog? New dog? new house?
It sounds like the resaon she's sliding has to do with the physics of friction....and maybe the cleaning products you use on the floor which makes it shiny and slippery. Your dog will probably find a way to compensate by standing at a different angle, shifting weight to other parts of the foot etc. Good luck Lylag |

Lylag: She is 10 months old. She plays indoors about half the time, and we have a smooth concrete floor in our basement that she runs around on. I think that may be causing her foot pads to become very smooth. I'm just concerned for the long term health of her feet. Last night it rained and then froze, and when I let her outside to go potty before bed, she had trouble keeping her footing on the deck.

Hi E,
I really don't think that there is any issue with the anatomy or health of her feet or if there ever will be. A smooth foot pad just doesn't seem to be a serious physical problem. Like I suggested before it is a friction problem. I think you are right in that the concrete floor is making the pads super smooth. This is only a bad thing because she is slipping. Suggestions: Perhaps put some cheap astroturf or carpet on the deck and in the basement. Get some type of runner (thinish piece of carpet) to put in certain key areas of the home. Or simply don't let her into the basement or get good or cheap carpet for the basement. It's up to you to be creative in how you adapt your environment to ease the dog's footing. They even have doggie booties that you might try. Hope that helps Best of luck, Lylag |
