Magic ate package of candy-wrapper and all!!
I got a package of Love Hearts for valentine's day today (you know - the sweet round ones with the messages on them?) I left them on the dining room table and I suspect my cat knocked them off and my pup got them. I discovered what was left of the plastic wrapper - not much - with 2 candies left in it. There were bits and pieces of candy and plastic on the couch. I only had one candy today so I believe Magic ate the rest. She seems to be ok, sleeping right now. Mostly I'm concerned about the plastic, thankfully it wasn't chocolate! Should I be worried?

Are they sweetened with sugar or a substitute? If a substitute, which one(s)?

I have no idea! The package is gone (she ate the paper too). Does it make a difference?

Yes. Some of the artificial sweeteners (I believe xylitol or maltilol, in particular) can cause life threatening drops of blood sugar in dogs.
How big was the package?

I just did a search and it looks like the worst offender is xylitol, but it's usually used in minty-tasting products and the candy hearts weren't mint-flavored, were they?

There were probably 15-20 candies in the package (less the 2 she didn't eat) and no, they weren't minty.
P.S. Thanks for researching that! P.S.S. I think it's starting to bother her now. She was lying down licking her lips alot, almost like she was gonna throw up. I gave her some water and hubby is taking her for a walk now, hoping it comes out one end or the other!

So not a very big package, but she's pretty small, isn't she? Do you think she shredded the plastic package or at larger chunks of it? And are you sure it was Magic and not one of the cats?

If she throws it up, you're way ahead of the game, so for a productive barf... so to speak!

Magic is about 12 lbs.
Yeah, I'm pretty certain it was her. The evidence was on the couch in her favourite spot, not where the cats tend to lay, and she had bits of the candy in her fur. Magic tends to chew things she shouldn't (like kleenex, and she ate a package of Halls cough drops before too! with no ill effects, mind you) The cats don't normally do that type of thing. I hope she barfs it up too!

I suspect she'll barf it up, just cuz the plastic is going to irritate her tummy, but she's still going to absorb a fair amount of sugar, so keep an eye on her. Not sure whether a sugar high is dangerous, but if she gets too hyper or her heart starts racing and she seems in distress, you might want to give a vet a call. Are there any 24/7 vets available in your area?

Here's a pic of the candy... they're Love Hearts, not Sweet Hearts; I'm trying to find an ingredient list

From what I've read, they contain dextrose which I think is okay. In all the articles about the Xylitol poisoning in dogs, they mention giving the dogs dextrose to counteract it. Not that eating all that dextrose makes it okay, but I don't think it's toxic.
Thanks Hazel for all your advice and concern. I"ll let you know how she does.

Not really...I've got a sporadic connection, so it's hit or miss. I was just searching dextrose and maltodextrose and yes, they often use it to treat hypoglycemia in dogs.
So your main problem will be the plastic ( that she tosses it up for you) and the sugar high. Does sugar do the same thing to dogs that it does to little kids? She'll be bouncing off the furniture.

I love Smarties, by the way. I'm envious because I didn't get any for Valentine's Day.

Well it seems like she's OK. She slept fine thru the night and has gone to the bathroom a few times but nothing strange came out of it (no pun intended!) She never did throw up either.
Thanks again for all your help!

Great news!
Watch her carefully for a few days, though, in case the plastic causes problems on the way out. She may still throw up--one of our dogs ate a piece of the foot off a Cuz and didn't throw it up until days later. It was a...ahem...pleasant surprise but we were very happy to see it.
