Moron owners are killing us ...
Today there were two more "pit bull" attacks in the news. In the first one, the owner has his door open, and the paperboy and his mom comes, the dog charges through and takes off a chunk of the boy's face. Now if you're a responsible owner, do you leave your front door open so that your dog could potentially get out? Why is it that these stupid dog owners are so lazy and lackadaisical about making sure that their dogs can't escape their property? But I digress ...
The second attack was on a small dog. Again, two pit bulls, RUNNING LOOSE, attacked this dog, and the eyewitnesses are stating how these dogs were in a different "zone." More fodder for the "ticking time bomb" crowd. Both owners have been charged (GOOD!) But you know, I would think that pit bull owners would be EXTRA careful these days, knowing that the media is just creaming themselves waiting for some more bad news to broadcast. Oh yeah, and it's our "saviour" station, CityTV, that has the picture of the boy with the chunk out of his lip, on their homepage. The media is not on any side, but their own. |

I may be nutz but-Don't most dogs see a kid on the
porch as less of a threat that an adult/ adult male on the porch? My dogs bark if anybody comes to the door but, when they see the person is a kid, they become friendly & not defensive. If it's a woman they are slightly alert, but friendly. If it's a male, adult or older teenager, they keep a closer eye on them. Not aggressive, more neutral, but just 'interested' & watchful.

Also I just wanted to add that the first insident of the boy who got bitten, the pit bull that did it apparently had attacket a dog before also, they showed the bull dog pup that was "attacked" on the news and I didn't see anything wrong with him. The witness said that they had to kick the pit bulls numerous times and really hard to get them out of "the zone" but my thought was if the 2 pit bulls did really wanted to hurt that puppy they would have (any bigger dog would have done some sort of dammage) there would have been a mark on the puppy.... could it be perhaps that the stupid owner of the two pits had the dogs off the leash (bad thing to do at the time) and the dogs went to play with the pup and it just looked like "another pit bull attack" to people who don't know??? Im just thinking out loud anyone agree or disagree??
so the problem is we still need to do somthing about bad owners they are making our good dogs look bad |

Nobody wants to here about more dog attacks and the media is just waiting for a story no matter what the breed . All we can ask of them is to not just report the headline but along with it include a brief description of what took place . The door being left open is clearly an owners responsibility . Any dog would be capable of this reaction and I think if the story is told the general public understands this . I don't know the other story so I cannot comment .

something I dont understand is why so many of these attacks seem to be the dogs protecting territory, like this one with the kid on the porch or other incidents where the dogs get out of yards and attack . This seems to me more like "guard dog behaviour and pits are not guard type dogs. I live in an apartment so maybe things are different with us but my dog couldnt be happier if someone comes to the door. even strangers. Theres a poodle that lives directly across the hall and theres no problem. I made sure I socialised him with the dog as soon as they moved in just incase Rocky ever slipped by me when I opened the door but there was not a hint of a problem. Maybe these dogs that got into trouble have the "job" of protecting thier owners property. My dog isn't exactly the most obediant boy in the world but I just dont see him reacting that way. May be its because hes not inheritantly dangerous

What idiots these owners are. They are giving their dog death sentences by allowing these things to happen. I think we would all agree that these things are totally preventable with a little responsible ownership and training and LEASHES in public. I hope they fine these people heavily. I agree we need to report these attacks by other dogs to the media. One question I saw on the news this morning that they had the Staffordshire club on the lawn at Queens Park yesterday doing agility and these dogs have never killed a human in Canada or the US why are they being banned?

Seeing the picture of this said"pit-bull"he looked very much like a JRT,but maybe that's how Staffordshire Terriers look like, only a little bigger....but then again, what do I know....
I just get this sinking feeling every time another attack is reported and moron Bryant, with a gleeful face saying five years from now there will be no more dog-bites,no more pit-bulls I just cannot believe this very stupid man....and he is our attorney general...

I agree, these owners are idiots, and I'm glad to see this one is being charged. I have a feeling that what is happening is there is much more to the story than we know. Maybe Daisy is the exception to the rule, but in our old house, there was a chipmunk that used to run around the brick on the house, and Daisy would go nuts chasing it. One day it ran up the house, lost it's footing and fell on the lawn, right in front of Daisy, and she immediatly snatched it up in her mouth. I yelled at her, and she immediatly dropped it. The second thing is, the chipmunk appeared to be fine (albeit incredibly P-O'd. It hurled little chimpmunk curse words at her as it ran off). So I really scratch my head when I hear about these dogs that attack and do so much damage when the owner is there.
Also, just back to my original point, there was a rottweiler attack in Fenelon Falls on Friday. Yet I can't find this in any major paper? Why? I suggest that any media outlet covering the pit bull attack be questioned on this. This is half of our problem, and why people think it is our dogs that do the attacking!

I sent an email to the Toronto Sun, on that very subject. They had a news blurb about a Pit bull that attacked another Dog.
The gist of my letter was, since when is a dog attacking another dog considered newsworthy? Of course, when it's a pit bull. I commended them for their official editorial stance against the ban, but then said they are doing a disservice with this kind of reporting. Why? Not because they are reporting pit bull attacks, but because they are NOT reporting all the other Dog on Dog attacks, thereby feeding the hysterical myth that Pit bulls are some kind of singular, possessed, demon-dog. Hey, be fair, and report ALL Dog attacks, including Retrievers and other "family" dogs that consistently make the top 10 in biting statistics. Of course, it wasn't printed ... |

But since everything from pugs to Akitas are being called pit bulls in any bite case, why not just say "ANY DOG WHO BITES, OR HAS BITTEN OR MAY BITE IS A PIT BULL EVEN IF IT CLEARLY ISN'T." |

I actually thought that city did a decent job of covering the attack, all things considered. Had they not covered it, they would look like hippocrites.
They showed the boy that got attacked by a " pit bull like" dog, and said that Bryant feels his law would stop this, but they also showed a woman that was attacked by a rotty, on the same day, and said "Bryant's law would do nothing to prevent this." Some of the people I've spoken to felt that " Bryant is starting to look like an ambulance chaser." He pops up to preach every time a pitbull attacks, but has no interest when other breeds attack. I really think that some of the general-public are starting to notice that Bryant seems more interested in proving that he is right than protecting the public. |
