Toys for a large breed puppy?
Hi,
Juno, our 10 week Pyrenees Shepard cross needs some toys! What do you suggest? I was thinking a Kong that she could have outside, a one of those knotted ropes. Also, can she have a pig ear or something like that at her age? TIA, Amanda |

When we got Nero (GSP) he was 3 months and the vet told us not to get anything too hard since his new teeth will be growing in. He didn't like the kong toys too much but he is in love with the rope... I would suggest to buy both and see what he preffers.
PS My vet said absolutely no pig ears for pups...He said to avoid all hard treats till he's about 6 months. Hope this helps. Last edited by Anna_C; February 19th, 2008 at 10:56 AM. |

Nylabone makes some good puppy bones (appropriate for teething) that last a good while.
Squeaky/stuffy toys were a favourite with Jaida when she was little, but those are (still) only for supervised play, because our dogs gut them (although we bought some of the "BIG MEAN KITTY" stuffies for Christmas, and they're pretty tough, they lasted a good while). We got a football-shaped "tennis" ball (I think Kong makes them), with a squeaky, that she LOVES, and they're big enough that the dogs can't choke on them, and durable (we still have them both after a year) Jaida also liked fabric (soft on teeth) frisbees for outside play. Her favourite toys were our cats

There is a toy out there called Tire Biter, my Border Collie pup loved it, she threw it around the house by herself without anyone needing to be played with, so in other terms she entertained herself, it was hilarious.

My guys aren't large breed, but medium size. I give them bully sticks to chew on every morning before we leave for work. I get the largest 12" + I think they are and cut them in half and give half to each pup. They gnaw on them for hours. Never gives them the runs either.
I shy away from pig ears. They're a once in a blue moon treat, they tend to get the runs from those. Any toy that squeaks enthralls them, but I don't let them have anything other than the bully sticks when they're home alone, just in case they tear into the toy and start eating the stuffing. Cindy |

I absolutely love the toys from Planet Dog. They are rated for toughness, and some even have a minty flavor. alot of their toys are hollow, so you can fill them with treats, as you would a KONG.
here's a link: http://www.planetdog.com/dogtoys.aspx I also love the kong too - but be sure to buy an appropriate size. I'd wait till the pup was older to purchase, since the xlarge ones aren't cheap, and the small puppy ones would be too small for your dog. if the toy can fit fully into the dog's mouth, it's too small. another brand I'm fond of is Busy Buddy toys. Here's a link to those: http://www.busybuddytoys.com/ |

Toys don't have to be just for chewing and teething. Our puppy enjoys a cardboard box which we allow him to rip to pieces. We watch to make sure he doesn't swallow too much of it. He also likes to shred newspaper, again we watch for swallowing. He has a great big teddy bear from Goodwill that he likes to wrestle with - watch for sewn on eyes and noses which can come off and be swallowed. Our big teddy is currently missing his nose and I need to do some reconstructive surgery on him, LOL. For our cats we have a stick with a shoelace attached to it that we drag around and they chase. Puppy likes to chase it just as much as the cats do.
Other ideas are to rotate the toys. We give three a day and each day replace them with three different ones. In our living room (where he is only allowed with supervision) he has a different set of toys which are all kept in a wicker basket. He seems to derive great pleasure from picking his own choices from the basket. Watch he doesn't try to make the basket the toy. |

Well, I got Juno a big knotted rope and a Pup Treads tire. I bought them a bit big so that she can play with them for a while. Yet the cat is still the best toy........ Why did I buy these toys again, lol?!?!

Just be careful with the big knotted rope. I bought one for my jaws and claws of death Eskimo when he was 4 months and he managed to take it apart in less then 10 minute. Very handy with his hand-like paws and teeth of a Rotti.
