Question about Digestive Enzymes
I posted this in the regular cat/dog food forum, but I think it maybe should have been put here because it deals with digesting raw food.
So, here goes... I just bought digestive enzymes for Barkley because I notice he gets very gas-y every time I introduce a new meat source. Last night he had raw chicken liver for the first time and although he absolutely loved it, hubby and I didn't love having to watch a movie with our faces buried in a blanket from the stench that night Talk about GAS-Y. I'm going to introduce pork into his diet shortly, and in an attempt to avoid a repetition of last night, I went and bought some broad spectrum DE's. My question is, how much do I give? One capsule or more? The directions on the bottle are for human consumption, so I'm not sure if it's the same for dogs? Also keep in mind that Barkley's still a 7.5 month old puppers. It also says that it should be taken 30 min before a meal with water. Would it be okay to just sprinkle it on his food or does it really need to be taken with water 30 min before the meal?

viola: 1 capsule a few minutes before mealtime is ok. just push it down his throat and follow with a treat, encourage drinking and you're all set
also try to keep meals simple... one or two different meats max at a time, and if you're feeding organs meats, just feed one kind of meat. too much variety, too soon can lead to nasty gas and loose stools.

Thanks TD. I followed your advice and it's been a few hours since Barkley had his dinner and so far no stinky bombs to report of Last night at about this time our eyes were tearing up from the stench
I couldn't help but mention that Barkley's getting a really muscular, lithe look to him. It's fantastic Is this a typical thing as a result of the raw diet? I think it must be. Today at the dog park, a few people commented on how healthy, lean and muscular he looked. I told them it's because of the raw diet and by the time I left I think a few people were very interested about raw which is always a good thing in my book. They were looking at their dogs and wishing they looked that lean and muscular instead of having that hot-dog/sausage shape, know what I mean?

viola... TOTALLY! raw-fed doggies don't get that doughy "sausage" look to them that carb-heavy diets promote... it's muscles all the way, baby! (just like body-builders shun carbs and grains and focus on quality proteins to build muscle mass)
isn't it awesome?

It really is awesome TD. When he was running in the park you could just see his muscles rippling under his coat and he had boundless energy. It really is a far cry from how he was when he was on kibble.
In my perfect world, everyone would feed their pets raw and they'd all be super healthy. It's hard though sometimes because I'm very passionate about raw and sometimes people see this as being narrow minded, which I really, REALLY don't mean to be. I think it's just because I saw the change in Barkley first hand and I just want to share it with everyone and say "Hey, you think your dog is doing great on kibble? Just give him a few weeks on raw and you'll be amazed at the difference". I really don't have anything against people feeding kibble, but I just wish they could all see what we see, if that makes any sense. I couldn't even conceive of going back to kibble after seeing the benefits of the raw diet.
