How difficult to switch vets?
Our wonderful, caring, sweet vet sold his practice last year. The new owner isn't dog friendly at all. She has pics of cats and exotics all over the walls of the practice. She raised the prices on dog exams and meds. DH's aunt worked for a vet for many years and said all of these tactics sound as if the new vet is trying to weed out the dogs and just concentrate on cats and exotics without actually coming right out and saying so.
We're not comfortable there anymore and want to switch to a new vet. How hard is it to switch to a new vet? Do we just tell the current office to send her records to the new office that we choose? Our girl is due for her vaccinations this month so we're hoping to get her in to a new place soon. Thanks! Last edited by hdme; April 9th, 2009 at 03:00 PM. Reason: spelling |

We have never had trouble when we had to switch vets. They usually fax the papers for you. Unlike with my Doctor whom I had to pay to have the paperwork transferred
Now is the time to change and I would not worry about it. You have the right to choose the right vet for both you and your pet.

When I moved I just took in any records and receipts that I had. I wouldn't be concerned about transferring the records unless your dog has a medical history that the new vet needs to know about.

I had no problems switching vets,my situation was similar to yours,I did not like the new vets.
I just asked for recommendations from people I knew and found a wonderful vet, they asked my old vets for my cats records, but never got them. It did not matter much, since I keep all the records myself. I did not even tell my old vets I was not coming back,I was very angry the last time I was there,so I think they knew. They have lost several patients that I know of.

Thanks everyone! We've decided to go to another vet in our area. I've gotten their price list for exams, meds, etc. and I've talked to people who work in the office. Everyone has been wonderfully helpful and kind, unlike the staff at the other office who made you feel as if you were bothering them when you called or visited. We have our first appt in a week and I'm excited to see how it goes.
Our dog has a slight medical history so the former office better transfer the records or I'll be stopping in to get them myself. |
