Dog is snorting, hacking, (coughing?)

My dog Leo has been periodically making snorting noises (they sound involuntary, like hiccups almost), and at times makes a hacking noise (like something's caught in his throat) and heaving - but no vomiting. This all started sometime today - I noticed it when I got home at 3. He doesn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort. He WAS in the kennel this past weekend, but he's been vaccinated for Kennel Cough. He's eating and drinking fine and otherwise it doesn't seem like anything's wrong with him.

We called the Vet, and are going in there tomorrow afternoon, but - does this sound familiar to anyone? Does he have a cough? Is he sick? Can dogs catch a cold?

It may just be kennel cough. Vaccination doesn't protect them 100% , they can still catch it. It takes about 7 to 10 days for a dog to show signs of kennel cough.

Good luck at the vet.

The Bordatella vaccine doesn't protect from all strains of Bordatella, unfortunately. It can be compared to the flu vaccine. People can still get influenza.

Two of our dogs have had kennel cough but the sneezing only lasted a couple of days or so and it went away on it's own. I have had foster puppies that came in with it too. Only one needed antibiotics. Gotta warn you though, you might have to be cleaning snot off your walls for a few days .

Just keep an eye on Leo. If he begins to discharge from his nose, take him to the vets for antibiotics if it turns green. A humidifier should help keep things running...including his nose.

This happens to keely when there is a change in weather, with global warming and all it could be 17 degrees out one day and 2 the next around here, and i notice when it changes over night she starts sniffling and snarking. It also happens when she eats grass. I try not letting her eat it because im araid she has an allergy to it or something. In keely's case i do not think its "Off to the vet" material, but at our next annual check up i will be asking about it.

Good luck with leo! BTW- Im happy you found him so soon after he got lost!

Hmm... maybe I should hold off on the vet for a few days? I don't want to medicate him if it could be something he can get over on his own... It WAS about 0 degrees on Monday, followed by about 40 degrees yesterday. And, Leo was running wild thru the forest for 5 hours last night - so maybe he's just reacting to the changes in weather and over use of his throat and lungs (Leo doesn't typically run anywhere - last night's 'expedition' was somewhat uncharacteristic of him - in fact, I think he's actually sore today!)

I'll keep an eye on him tomorrow and see how he does. His nose is no more drippy than normal. And... we already have snot all over our walls, so... a little more won't make much difference.

Poor Leo - it's been a rough 24 hours for the poor guy.

It's probably okay to wait. Listen for raspiness of breath, or the discharge turning greenish. Take him in if he gets too lethargic or if he stops eating, too.

KC is a pain in the patooti... We had 6 dogs all snarking and hacking at the same time for a few days...really a rather remarkable sound, but not one you want to hear...

Has he ever had allergies before?

Patrón used to snort and cough before I started giving him Benadryl.

Maybe try giving your dog one? WITH vet aproval of course. I think its 25mg per 30lbs? I dont remember exactly now since the vet has Patrón on like 100mg twice a day...

You can always call a vet and speak to them for free, or a vet tech. They can give you some helpful advice too!

all better

So - Leo seems to have recovered from his cough on his own - thanks to all who told me it was ok to wait a day or so on that - saved me probably $120, all in all, (and saved Leo a stressful trip to the vet!).

He hasn't coughed in about a week and seems completely back to normal.
Thanks everyone!

Glad to hear he is better, I always keep Zev on hand ( used for treating coughs in horses and dogs) mix it just right with some honey and voila, no more offensive cough.

Yay, Leo! Kicking the cough on his own! Glad he's feeling better, LaurenBev!

Our dog had this problem last winter. We took him to the vet and $80 later he told us to buy a humidifier. It was just a reverse sneeze and our house was dry.

What size is your dog?

I guess it depends on the size of the dog but my Misha is quite small and I give her baby/child decongestant, just a spoonful, and not only does she love it but it works wonders for her.

Misha is a former puppy mill dog and spent more than 6 years locked up! Getting medicine into her before was horrible but she loves the taste of the baby/child decongestant - it tastes like bubble gum - and she actually comes over to me when I tell her it is time to take her medicine. Unfortunately, her congestion is chronic probably from the years locked up in a cage and who knows what the conditions were???

Good luck in helping your dog!

If there are no excretions (yellow or green) coming from the nostrils then I would not worry to0 much. It may however require investigation. It could be a slight case of kennel cough but I am leaning more towards inverted sneezing. I have had 2 dogs like this that did require meds to rid them of the problem. A vet visit would be beneficial to properly diagnose the problem.

Good luck.
