Licking stitches, hates E-collar
HI everyone,
We just adopted a 14month old Golden from a rescue organization 2 weeks ago. Shortly afterwards, we got him neutered. For the first week, he was healing well but lately he has been licking and it has gotten red. We brought him to the vet and they gave antibiotics to bring down the swelling (since they didn't think he was all that infected). They also mentioned to try the Elizabethan collar. Last night he freaked out when we put it on. He rolled around the floor and tried to bite it off and scratch it off with his paws. We felt best to remove it (after about 10 minutes, hoping he would eventually get used to it) since he seemed thouroughly angry. Since we cannot supervise him when we are at work or asleep what should we do to prevent him licking? Is there anything? Thanks! |

Licking stitches, hates E-collar
Hi! We had the same problem with our dog! He chewed the E-collar right off so it was pretty useless! We got him some cream called Veriton from the vet and it is specifically for that - it tastes terrible so the dog won't lick. It was only about $10 or so, cheaper than another E-collar! Good luck, and thanks for rescuing a big puppy!!!!

If you have a very big plastic bucket - like the kind a gallon of ice cream comes in - you could cut it up one side and cut the bottom out. Then tape up sharp edges, put around your dog's neck and tape it closed.
If it will fit on his neck this will prevent him from reaching his stitches and be much less stressful than an E collar. |

Tucker just got fixed last week, and we have put an e-collar on him. We only put it on him in his crate at night and when we go to work. No he doesn't like it and looks at you like get this friggin thing off, but his stiches are almost healed and look great. They hate it but what can you do. My last dog ripped out stiches in his back feet (dew claw removal) and it ended up scaring his feet, getting infected and being restiched. So the collar was worth it, but they never chewed it off either one of them. Although Travis use to sit on the couch put the collar between his legs and still lick the stiches but not like what he did without the collar. I'm trying to picture how he could chew it off? But I guess if there is a will there is a way.

My dog had a nasty gash from rolling on a broken bottle in a dog field, (I hate litterbugs!! ) and we swore by t-shirts for his stitches....what about cotton boxer shorts?

At the vet clinic's I have worked at we always recommended using roll-on underarm deodorant around...but not on the sutures. Works like a charm.
Taste it yourself, you'll see.
