KK's Roy the Dawg's Nose Issue-help??

Before posting this, I skimmed the first page, and was fairly alarmed to read of 'Kai'smom's' problem with some sort of nasal fungus affecting her poor husky. At least she's getting some answers (and the usual BB support, thank goodness), but a disturbing scenario.

I was concerned about our newly adopted chocolate lab 'Roy' before I read about the husky, and now...I don't know what to think. Roy has been totally fine for the 2 months or so that we've had him, that is until about 2 days ago.

An hour or 2 after our usual daily walk around the perimeter of our small farm, Roy appeared to mysteriously acquire a dime-sized raw spot on his nose; he does galumph around and bash into the odd thing, so we put a bit of antiseptic ointment on it.

About 24 hours later, that small patch quite suddenly enlarged-and a few smaller spots in the same vicinity emerged. Roy was still happy and active (apparently in no pain), but of course we got him to the vet asap, yesterday afternoon.

The vet we saw at our new clinic-after the BIG CHAOTIC FARM MOVE that has kept me off the BB for AGES-prescribed a course of steroids (prednisone) and antibiotics (cephalexin). So far, the lesions have become less red and open, likely due to the pred. making the site less itchy, thus letting Roy not rub it.

Unlike the poor husy in Cape Town, Roy has not had any nosebleeds etc., and his general aspect as mentioned is still robust (appetite, energy). However, it had already occured to me-in the evening, after the app't, of course-that the alfalfa field we walk around was just swathed the day Roy developed the first small lesion.

It's been a very damp summer, and Roy was racing around plunging his head into the swath to snuffle-freshly cut alfalfa has all sorts of extra 'smells', along with possible mice/frogs chewed up by the machine.

The vet was speculating about contact/allergic dermatitis; I'm wondering what anyone may think? It's the weekend now, but I'll try to phone the clinic just to mention the 'fungus' issue...

Below is a pic of brave Roy's nose, kinda icky but thought it might help??

Ohh! poor Roy that's quite the ouchie

Did the vet take skin scrapings to check for mites etc?

Do you think he could've initiallly scraped it on a wood/barbwire fence then contact with the spray made the original sore worse?

for Roy

Owchie!! That looks painful! I have my fingers crossed for you that it is just something that Roy has gallumped into too fast and scraped his nose. Have lots of fingers and paws crossed here for Ol' Roy!!

KK,ouch,that looks awful,poor Roy..
The pups with the"fungus"I believe showed no external sores, not like Roy,so hopefully this is an allergy he's been scratching and can be treated.
This is his former home, right???Should he not be used to the surroundings already? For Roy and you

KK, our lab often have gotten an abraded nose from rubbing in grass and it usually healed up rather quickly.

However, what Roy has looks suspiciously like folliculitis, which can be a complication from abrasion. Ridge had it from a tiny little sore on the top of her nose--the infection got deep into the follicles and spread outward till her whole nose was affected. It started with a discoloration, then a small raw spot, with small spots opening up around it and merging with the original, then getting pussy.

It took some heavy duty meds to clear it up. Did the vet want you to use warm compresses at all? If it's folliculitis, it will help, although Roy may not want you to mess with it...

Here's the link to Ridge's thread: http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=48242

There are many types of fungal diseases. The type affecting the sinus cavity, as suspected with Kai'smom's pet, do not start with surface lesions. In fact they usually do not become cutaneous lesions. Sometimes these systemic aggressive fungal infections can be cutaneous but it is not as common. There are many arthropods which can inject some nasty venoms which can cause an increasing area of tissue necrosis over time. The brown recluse is a spider whose bite can lead to severe tissue necrosis over time.

Unfortunately the skin can only react a few ways to severe inflammation so many different causes can look the same. With the deep erosion that is being seen on the top of the nose: bacterial, arthropod venom, allergic dermatitis, trauma with secondary infection, heat/cold damage, and tumor. Fungal and mite infections are possible but lower on the differential at this time.

If the lesion does not continue to improve and resolve with the medications prescribed, then a biopsy would be an option. It can look for signs of mites, cancer, fungus, and allergic dermatitis. It is not always definitive but can help a lot.

Good luck

Thank you veryvery!! much for the helpful and encouraging replies to Roy's Schnozz Crisis, Dr. Lee, and the above BB regular s! I have found all the posts to be reassuring and/or informative-as usual .

Can you tell that Roy is doing better today, with my use of the 'smilies'/icons? After 3 doses of meds, Roy's nose was looking better this a.m., and roughly 24 hrs. after his first dose, the schnozzola is even less icky-looking .; swelling is down significantly, the existing sores are 'drying up'...and there are no new sores.

I'm going to hold off on the Happy! Dance for a bit (partly due to my separated ribs sustained during a 'scything [weeds]' incident-now I know why people generally quit scything around the turn of the 18th?? century )...and partly due to my knees going on rotating strikes after I sprinted around with Roy one time too many ).

However, things are certainly looking up re: Roy, and for that I'm very grateful. Thanks again to everyone for your help, and I'll let you know how things progress .

Thumbs up

Thanks, everyone, for your best [recovery] wishes-on behalf of 'Le Roy'/Dawg . His nose is continuing to look good, which is a huge relief; when it resembled raw meat on Friday during our trip to the vet, we were getting a lot of attention (nice folks, but we tend to shun the spotlight !).

I asked Roy to post a little thank-you here earlier today, but he claimed that he simply didn't feel up to it...then proceeded to play tag with the JRT for hours. Very nice, Royboy!!

p.s. TeriM...yes, there are a few pics the Roy Le Dawg on the Feral Cat Capture thread (he hi-jacked it for a while )...I'm assuming the 'new addition' referred to Roy? If it didn't, and we have even MORE animals, I'm in deep trouble ?!
