I'm wonderng how they know the animals infected the staff and not the other way around. And correct me if i'm wrong, but isnt the THS still under the OSPCA's control,,and isn't the THS also completely empty right now. Send the animals and as much staff as possible there and scrub the crap out of the other shelter.

I don't even think they have to do this , I think they just need to treat the animals and humans.

"Kate McDonald, OSPCA's chief executive officer, says the animals are being euthanized to avert a "public health issue."

But Ken Brown, York Region's infectious disease manager, says the public is not at risk."

and Anita asks a very good question, if the province has no power to act because OSPCA is a registered charity and not an ABC of the government then WHO is monitoring the OSPCA.

Same here, I have no wheels and it's about a 15km walk.

Now they are asking the public/professionals for help for the remaining animals http://www.yorkregion.com/news/artic...p-save-animals

This is from the official York region website.

OSPCA CEO Ms MacDonald:

“The standard protocol was not followed. This is now at an epidemic level. The exact number of animals infected is unknown, but we know it’s a very large number.”

But, you were all set to euthanize the lot of them until you "got caught".

its actually quite easy to control if you take in one or two animals, we use to do whole herds of cows.

I could go in the evening and help bath the dogs, I have a little bit of experience. Does anyone know if that groomer is going to the shelter?

makes me wonder how many animals they routinely put down if they have ringworm. I'd like to know how many animals they put down and for what. It's time for some accountability on what they do on a daily basis and how they do it. I bet if they didn't have to shut down the shelter and give an explanation for it being shut down, we never would have been told about it period. That entire organization, not just the york region branch is tainted in my eyes now and they will never be a credible organization as far as I'm concerned.

The Province's position that it can do nothing appears to be horse-hockey.

This is from the Act...

Animal Care Review Board

Board continued
16. (1) The Animal Care Review Board is continued under the name Animal Care Review Board in English and Commission d’étude des soins aux animaux in French. R.S.O. 1990, c. O.36, s. 16 (1).
Idem
(2) The Board shall consist of not fewer than three persons who shall be appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. R.S.O. 1990, c. O.36, s. 16 (2); 2006, c. 34, s. 39.
Chair, vice-chair
(3) The Lieutenant Governor in Council may appoint one of the members of the Board as chair and another of the members as vice-chair. R.S.O. 1990, c. O.36, s. 16 (3).
Composition of Board for hearings
(4) A proceeding before the Board shall be heard and determined by a panel consisting of one or more members of the Board, as assigned by the chair or vice-chair of the Board. 2001, c. 9, Sched. M, s. 1.
Remuneration of members
(5) The members of the Board shall receive such remuneration and expenses as the Lieutenant Governor in Council determines. R.S.O. 1990, c. O.36, s. 16 (5).
Appeal to Board
17. (1) The owner or custodian of any animal who considers themself aggrieved by an order made under subsection 13 (1) or by the removal of an animal under subsection 14 (1) may, within five business days of receiving notice of the order or removal, appeal against the order or request the return of the animal by notice in writing to the chair of the Board. R.S.O. 1990, c. O.36, s. 17 (1); 1993, c. 27, Sched.; 2006, c. 19, Sched. F, s. 3 (1).:

There's more under regulations of course but the province CLEARLY regulates and appoints the overseers.

I think that whenever anything like this happens we need to overwhelm them with emails stating our opinion and giving suggestions as to how this should be dealt with. How many of us on this forum are employees of this shelter? Probably not one.

the animals are so meaningless to some people. It's only going to get worse.

Melinda, yes,I read it in the paper
Everyone who donates to the OSPCA should cancel, there are many struggling rescues that would use money, what it is supposed to be used for, helping animals, not killing them.

I agree, but I'd like to send a donation to one of the "rescues" or "groomers" whom ever is helping with meds and treatments, if anyone hears of who is helping the remaining animals, could you please post it?

My daughter has been crying since finding out on Monday.....she just pulled out of there with people calling her a "murderer" and banging on her personal truck......She started volunteering at the age of 15 and is now 23, dedicating the last 8 years to helping animals in need and she gets called a "murderer"......She is a basket case right now.

When wearing the uniform you a guilty by association. People are running on emotions right now, so 'anyone' will do at this point.

Sorry your daughter is facing this Chris.

Ahh Chris - please give Ethel a huge hug from me. She must be devastated. I know how hard she works. I can't fathom what she is going through. I know in my heart she fought with all she is worth to save animals. Please let her know I am thinking of her. All of the OSPCA employees will be getting painted with the same brush right now. Guilty or not. Ethel - hang in sweetie.
