Maggie May
Hi there.
6 months after moving from Canada to the US to be with the man I love, it was time to bring a 4 legged furry companion into our lives. I had left my 5 year old shih tzu Auti with my parents as they became quite attached to her on my many trips south. I just wanted a pet and didn't realize how many were into showing dogs until we began looking. In any event we were able to find 7 week old Maggie May in a city close by. We met her on Easter Sunday and planned to bring her home on Tuesday. She was a so wonderful, never whined and would jump out of her basket when she had to pee or poop. My husband, who had never had a dog let alone a puppy before, quickly fell in love with her. Wednesday she seemed settled in and even tried to bark at my feet. It was as if she belonged to only us. That night she vomited x 2. I thought it might be the change of dogfood as recommended. That morning she refused to drink or eat and when I put her outside she just laid down. This was not the lively ball of fur I had the previous day. By noon I knew something was wrong so called the Vet. We had an appointment the next day to take her in, but I didn't want to wait. As soon as I got there, they looked at her and said she had parvo virus. She was the 3rd puppy from the same litter. Her vet said she was not dehydrated yet as I brought her in very early. He explained to me the treatment and the 50/50 chance. He also told me the fee. I told him she needed to be treated. When I spoke to the Vet on Friday he was impressed by her response to the medication but was very concerned about her white blood cell count. He told me one of the other puppies was back on food and doing quite well. He did tell me she was still in danger but was hopeful. We got the call early Saturday morning that Maggie May had crossed over Rainbow Bridge. I was devastated. I really believed she would pull through. My husband spoke to the owner and she offered to refund the fee back. She became quite angry that we took Maggie May to the Vet and that we should of taken her back to the breeder. She equated Maggie May to that of a vacuum cleaner purchased at wal-mart. She said if you buy a vacuum cleaner and it is broken you don't take it to the repair shop you return it. My husband informed her it was a medical emergency. In any event, should we sue for the Vet bills? Is the breeder/owner responsible for selling us a sick puppy? We signed no contract. |

I am sooo very sorry for your loss...
You didn't have a contract with this breeder?I don't know of any reputable breeder who doesn't have a contract for their pups. And this was the third pup with parvo? And she got mad at you for taking the pup to the vet instead of to her? This does not sound like a reputable breeder at all.Something not right there. Does this breeder show her dogs? And champions or titled dogs? What about the pedigrees? What do you know about this breeder?Where they health and genetic tested at all? Sorry for all the questions.Just trying to figure this out. You can try to sue her in small claims. Do you have the kennel name? You can pm it to me so I can check it out.

What I know is she is a first time breeder to "see if she wanted to get into the business".
I do not think she shows her dogs. She owns 3 and the sire came from another breeder. I was told they were healthy but there was no genetic testing done. I do have Maggie May's papers. I was also wondering (because from what I have learned about parvo and that she should not be breeding for at least a year), if there was some way to stop her as she did offer first pick of the next litter. I graciously declined. |

I am so very sorry for your loss. A reputable breeder is only one who breeds to improve the breed and thus breeds ONLY those dogs/cats that are champions and possess attributes that will enhance the breed. They also are engaged in serious genetic work and care for their animals like they are their babies!!
Needless to say, this woman does not qualify. People like this backyard breeder make me so mad (Not as angry as you are at this point tho). I would call the Better Business Bureau and even contact the local media if they are interested in anything besides the adscam scandal. Most reputable breeders also have a contract that states essentially they will be responsible for their babies forever (if anything happened to the new "owner" for ex). This person sounds cruel!! I would get out as much info as you can about her to make sure she never sells another puppy and thus is out of business. |

I'm terribly sorry for your loss, parvo is a devastating disease and very difficult to fight. May Maggie May have many happy days over Rainbow Bridge.

Yes they are AKC registration papers.
I have bleached once and will do it again. We will not be getting another puppy until I return from my visit back to Canada. That would of made it at least 3 months. The Vet indicated a month would be long enough after we bleached everything. (thank goodness for carpets that can handle bleach). My goal is to stop her from breeding and causing any more senseless pain to any puppies. |

Parvo can live in a home for between 6 months to a year. It can also live on your lawn if the puppy did any potties outside. If you are in a warm climate area then parvo can last even longer outside. Just a word of caution as you do not want to infect the next little one you decide to get.

Well I'd have the pup vaccinated before bringing her home, then no worries. Of course this will depend upon the age of your next one, whether it is old enough to be vaccinated yet.
I'd sue the pants off of that lady in civil court, you betcha. I'm very sorry for your loss. |

This is horrible - a real example of the worst of the crappy breeders.
Take her to court and sue her for the vet bills. These people have to be taught a lesson. |

I just don't want anyone thinking that the pup/dog had a vaccination so it will be safe. Parvo is a terrible one to fight and being forewarned is forarmed(sp?).

I'm really sorry to hear about your loss and i hope you are doing ok *hugs* As for the legal standpoint on "sueing her." You might be able to pull something through on small claims, but that is pretty touchy. When you purchase a used car from someone, usually you are purchasing it "as is." Because you didn't sign a contract with the breeder stating anything against it's health, i think you would have a really hard time winning that battle. That might not even be worth the energy. However i do agree, that getting in touch with BBB, media, newspapers...u name it, would be a great idea. Get this ladies name out there and show her true colours to society. That will make the difference!!! Good luck with everything, and i'm sorry to hear again Mandi |

This doesn't sound like a reputable breeder at all. In fact she doesn't even sound like she's a decent person IMO! Most good breeders would think that you did good as a responsible pet owner, you took your baby to the hospital to get looked at and treated. That is what a responsible pet owner would have done in your situation. A responsible breeder would thank you for doing that and not reprimand you for trying to save the life of your precious puppy! Like the others said, you didn't have a contract so it might be difficult to sue. You could try small claims court. Do spread the work around. Word of mouth travels fast especially when you hit the media. As for the parvo, BMDLuver is correct. Puppies are not usually protected 100% until they are older, even with vaccinations. I know someone who also lost her young pup to this disease. She had another dog who is a couple years old and he was not affected at all. |
