Mini Dachshund unexplained yelping

My 5 year old Mini dachshund started yelping the other afternoon when my fiance picked her up. She lost controll of her bladder and peed on him as well. When I got home, not 5 min later, we took her to the vet. They said she was constipated but did a back x-ray just to make sure her back was ok. The x-ray came back and they said that her back looked perfect and that she would be fine. They gave her two enemas, she went a little bit but not much. They sent her home and said by the next morning she should be fine. It is now 4 days later and she is worse. Her breathing is very shallow, she is shaking, and her stomach tightens up at times. She will not jump or sit up(which she used to do a lot) or run and play. When you pick her up or even act like you are going to pick her up she yelps extremely loud. You dont even have to touch her and she yelps. I am not sure what to do. They said there is nothing wrong with her back. I am not sure what to do. I can not take her back to this vet they are too expensive, I am a college student with limited funds. Is there any at home test that I can do or anything? Thank you for any help that you can give!

It sounds like she is in a lot of pain. This is the time to use your emergency fund or beg for help from your parents or friends. If it were me I wouldn't even wait until morning, that's hours more suffering and it could be a life-threatening condition.

She is ok when we let her lay and rest. I had to borrow the money for the first vet visit. They are the only vet around and said there is nothing else they can do because her back looks fine. Do you know of anything else that might cause these symptoms? I am heating the same thing from everyone, ICDD but that is not the problem. or so I have been told by the vet that took x-rays.

Lyndeh, it could be an obstruction in her bowel, it could be a pinched nerve. It could be just about anything. This really is the time to see a Vet. Your dog is in pain and she's not improving, she's worsening. See another Vet if you aren't happy with the one you have. I know money is tight but, that really is the only option. Let us know how everything works out.

Dachshunds are prone to back problems, specifically pinched nerves/ruptured discs. I am not sure what the normal treatment is other than surgery.

just a note I can't vouch for the accuracy of the sites, just using them as examples as to how common back problems are in the breed. I'm not sure what other tests could be done though, because for something like this you might need an MRI or something, which is several thousand dollars alone.

Hope you find an answer soon. My friend has a dachshund that is terribly overweight and she's gone through the back problems before too..

It could be a bowel obstruction, or it could still be a back issue which could cause nerve damage to the bowel and bladder. There is not really much that can be done over the internet for your girl, it sounds like she is in a lot of pain and is quiet uncomfortable. Perhaps you can have the vet send the x-rays to another vet who can examine them again, it is possible there is a very subtle anomaly that could be picked up by a more qualified eye.

I hope your girl improves, I have a mini Dachsund and I am terrified of the possibility of disc issues which are so common in these little guys

I had a Dachsund many years ago and she got the bad back. We had to keep her tired up and quiet for a few weeks. The vet told me that I would have to carry her up and down stairs and no jumping up and down off the couch anymore.

I know she was on meds, but I can't remember what they were, pain pills I would imagaine. It was over 30 years ago, I wish I could remember more.

I hope your pup will get better and I hope u can take her back to the vet.

lyndenh, first of all welcome to pets.ca but sorry to hear that your little girl is in so much pain right now.

I agree with the other posters and, if it were me, I would taking her to a different vet for a second opinion even if it means travelling a bit to get there. I hope that is possible for you ....good luck and please keep us posted.

It almost has to be a back problem and will most likely require surgery. It is worth it and really helps the dog feel better fast and add time to her life. We have had two mini's that needed back work. It can be as simple as jumping off the bed or walking up the stairs that triggers it.
