Question grass rolling

quick question, when I take my dog out onto the lawn he rolls in the grass so much that he goes onto his back and his face and just has a great time covering himself in grass...why does he do this?

Because he loves it My cats always roll themselves in the dirt(soil)in my garden, they love it.
If there is a problem with your dog rolling in the grass,I am sure someone will let you know.I think he just loves the smell...

Other then your average frolicking around

They do rub into dead things, I've seen them do it!
Dead anything, birds, skunks, squirrels, caterpillars
AND sometimes just the scent of another animal!

They know what they're doing, thats what matters lmao

Bob does something pretty funny. Well actually it's not that funny at all it's kind of gross. When we're out on walks, he'll pull to go to a bush. I always used to think he had to pee. But sometimes he just brushes up against the bush and keeps going.
Finally I think I figured out what he's doing. I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. HE"S RUBBING HIMSELF ON OTHER DOGS PEE!!!! One day when we got back I was petting him and he had this funny smell about him. I remembered that he'd been rubbing on bushes and sniffed him. He smelled like pee! Damnit! Anyhoo, now I don't let him pee on bushes anymore because he keeps faking me out all the time and goes for the rub. Polls and trees and the occasional mail box if it presents itself.

Someone told me that dogs will rub on dead things or poop and stuff to mask their own scent if they were hunting or something. I guess it has just been kept as a trait despite domestication of dogs.

charlies favourite scent is fish offal, whenever we are near a river she will find a gutted or dead fish and roll all over it , she cannot control herself. we have lost many a good collar to the scent as it is impossible to get out of anything but the dog, and boy is she insulted when i freak out and wash her, i think she does it to impress me, the beautiful smell of dead fish dog, mmmmm

Molly also loves rolling all over dead fish, she'll pull them out of the river and roll her entire body over it. It is sooo disgusting!!

Once she did it when we were away visiting and I of course didn't have the proper stuff to give her a bath with and so we ended up having to soap her up with some strong smelling floral shampoo...it didn't really get rid of the smell so she went around with this awful odor combination of sweet rotten fish. Poor thing, no one wanted to get close to her for the rest of the day!!

I think it's the wild side of them wanting to mask their own scent from years back so they woulndn't be detected when going after prey

I have to inject a serious note here. Years ago my dad's border collie suddenly got sick and died while my brother was keeping him while my parents were on a trip. At the time, the vet said they get several dogs a year poisoned from eating dead salmon when they are spawning.

This thread sure went south real quick. Depressing. Dogs and cats both like to roll in grass for the simple pleasure of it. Have any of you ever done anything for the "simple pleasure"?....on second thought, don't answer that. (loaded question for some..lol)

No dead things allowed, some do it if given the oppertunity and some do not.
Poisions, this can be a possibility but rare, I hope. I have seen some of this but I have to maintain hope that not all of society is that stupid.

Face it. Rolling in grass is fun. I did it as a kid, I bet all of you did at some point. We enjoyed it too.

So, animals can enjoy a "good roll & romp" if they so choose. Not always does this envolve something gross or dangerous.
Btw, horse's do it, so do cow's, goats, pigs, elephants, deer, and I could go on. Rain is coming down in buckets and I have a sudden urge to build a big boat. Rant over....

I heard Luba. Stay safe...all my Northern friends stay safe.

As for my grass rolling experience, still love it. I am usually on a tangent after the neighbors pesty peacocks when this happens. It is a sight to behold I'm tellin' ya....This Grandma has caught a few too.

Rolling in grass is good for the soul. Some do it for the pure bliss.
