Unhappy please send positive vibes tomorrow!!

I have come to this board many times for advice in the last three years since I adopted my dog, and have learned a lot. I've tried to pass on my knowledge in return as well. My dog Albert, has had some eye issues recently, it quickly became glaucoma, and he is now losing his eye tomorrow.

We tried all the medicines, took all the tests..he is in pain and uncomfortable. I know that psychologically, he won't know he's missing his eye and that it will hurt me more than him. I know he is a beautiful, resilient creature that will adjust fine. It hurts me to think that this could have been avoided somehow but the truth is, we can't find a reason for the eye inflammation that then turned to glaucoma.

I ask if any of you have had this experience, to please pass on your wisdom to me. I cry when I think about his beautiful brown eyes looking up at me. When I adopted him, he was dingy, dirty, skinny...but we fell instantly in love with those eyes. To think he's losing one is just killing me.

I am trying to remain positive, he still has one good eye, he will no longer be in pain..he will still always be beautiful to us...but it still hurts.

He goes in for surgery tomorrow, and I feel defeated tonight. At least there is no permanent risk to his health..just two years ago he almost died of kidney disease, and we got through that hurdle beautifuly. Now this. I just want to enjoy the last few years I have with him. But I am heartbroken tonight.

If anyone has anything to share with me about what to be prepared for, and anything I can do to help him adjust to his seeing impairment, I would greatly appreciate it. Otherwise, a positive vibe or prayer will do.

As always, thank you for all of your help.

Dogs and cats are so adaptable that I am sure Albert won't make losing one eye affect his life. There are people on this board who's dogs lost a limb and the dogs seemed to have adapted very well.
Give it a few minutes; people will be writing to you soon on their expereince. Good luck tomorrow.

I am so sorry that Albert has to go to surgery tomorrow and I am sending you all the positive vibes I can! I think these issues hurt us humans more than the doggie, it sounds like you are doing everything right for Albert...

My thoughts and prayers will be with you tomorrow (and tonight!)

You will still have your beautiful Albert to look at and he will still be able to see you.

I have no information to help you figure out how to help Albert adjust after his surgery, but I am sure he will be ok....

Wow..Thank you so much for the Quick replies...and Jim Hall...you just made me smile for the first time in days!! Thank you!!!

Yes I know dogs (all animals really) can be so resilient and I'm trying to take comfort that he will feel so much better after tomorrow after suffering with these eye issues the last two weeks with all the eyedrops, ointments, pills, countless trips to the specialists..it will be nice for him to have a break.

I just love him so much and I just want him to be happy and healthy..that's all any of us want right??

He's getting a teeth cleaning too..so he'll be all spruced up with shiny teeth (minus one or two..i know he's got some loose ones:sad and fresh breath.

He is such a loving, beautiful little guy..I only wish I'd had him since he was a pup..I only got him three years ago but I feel like he's been with me my whole life. To think someone did not care for him for so long, and then threw him away...at least that led him to me...though the damage to his health was done, and now we're stuck trying to fix it all. But it is what it is.

Thank you thank you thank you for all the great posts!

Good luck and good vibes for you! My friend has a senior that is going blind and she is doing wonderfully. They still do their regular routine of long walks. She is a little bit more grumbly to other dogs but its understandable. But she has adapted really well.

for the surgery! I'm sure it will go well . I suppose he'll be in a cone for a while so he doesn't scratch at his eye while it's healing? That will also serve to protect it while he's adjusting.

Probably he won't even notice the eye is gone except that he'll be painfree. Do you think he has much vision out of that eye now, considering the extent of the glaucoma damage? If he's not using it much now, anyway, his adjustment will be quick, because he's already used to being blind on that side.

You'll both be in my thoughts and prayers tomorrow Don't forget to keep us posted!!!

for a smooth surgery and a speedy recovery... I'm sure he'll be so relieved without it! And as Jim said... he could start a new doggie trend.... eye patches! How cute would that be?

Talking Update on Albert

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!! for all the positive vibes and kind words, his daddy, little sister and I thank you!

Albert went in this morning..early so they could give him a few hours of fluid therapy..important with his kidney deficiency. I just heard from the vet and the eye surgery went quite well. They will take the eye and run a pathology on it to see if they can figure out what on earth caused this. it was soo fast...just three weeks ago we took him in for a bloodshot eye! How scary!! I hope this thread can help someone else!

Luckily, it doesn't seem to be due to any internal issues..we've done every test..plus I monitor blood/urine every 3 months anyway with the kidneys..so we would've found something. So I this is it!! just the eye, and no real threat to his health.

I do believe he has lost all sight in that eye by now. The pressures built up so bad the last week. We tried everything..manually draining fluid, countless eyedrops..nothing was working and he was in pain. So the most important thing, like you guys said is that we take this thing out and he will feel like a million bucks again. He probably has adjusted to seeing with one eye a bit. A few times he would bang his head on my leg or an arm chair if it was on his 'blind' spot.

They are cleaning his teeth now..which was much needed too..so hopefully I can pick him up in a few hours.

thank you again for all the positive words! I can't tell you how much they mean to me!

and I love the pirate idea..just might need to go find a doggie pirate costume! our friends joke he'll look like a little 'tough guy street thug' now!

whatever it takes to help us smile, right? He'll feel better and have no idea what happened. I am thankful for that.

Good luck! I can certainly feel for you, as I would feel exactly the same. And I'm sure Albert is the only one who won't think it's that big a deal ;-)

I'm so glad it went well! And for good results on the pathology, too!

So is Albert home showing off his shining pearly whites tonight?

lm9012 I'm so sorry I missed this post yesterday.

Happy to hear Albert did great through surgery

I know with kidney cats, I'm guessing the same for dogs, high blood pressure aka hypertension if untreated can lead to detached retinas which means blindness but I haven't seen anything to indicate a link to kidney failure.

Terrier breeds, among others, are prone to primary (hereditary) glaucoma.

Albert is a fighter and he'll come through this just fine too

I just saw your post. I hope Albert is back home in your arms and has a speedy recovery. I know it isn't the same, but my older guy is deaf--he gets along so well, I sometimes forget he even has a problem. It is remarkable how well they adjust.

Update- with Pics

Thank you all again for the kind words! We picked him up Tuesday night and he was very groggy from the pain meds..he could barely sit up. When they first brought him to me I'll admit it hit me hard..and I cried, but I was also happy that it was all done. He did well at home, his personality was showing immediately..he was 'fighting' the drugs and kept trying to stay awake.aware of our every move. We tried to not move too much, kept the lights low...just tried to keep the environment as calm and quiet as possible. While we ate dinner he begged.. (yup, now we get a one-eyed sad puppy begging face..still quite irresistible!! ) He couldn't stand up much and with all the fluids he needed to pee a lot. We tried to walk him but I ended up just putting some towels and puppy pads and blankets down. He did have a few accidents but it was ok. Through the haze could feel that he was wet so he was very annoyed ..All in all..he was coming back around. By 2 AM that night he was wimpering to be let out. We let him out and although he couldn't kick up his leg..he squatted down and peed away. That was my final sigh of relief..and I knew my dog was back. Such a good boy, already asking to go out. He's on pain meds and antibiotics..and still adjusting to one eye. He isn't eating too much..but he does take treats and the liverwurst I hide his pills in. Last night I heated up his food and fed him from my hand. I think his perception may be off, if I bring the plate up to his mouth he eats a bit or from my hand. So we'll work on that these next few days, no biggie. His food is home made, and mushy anyway..chicken/eggs/veggies..so it's easy on his teeth. The fact that he'll take the other snacks lets me know he's ok too. I've attached some pics. His little sister has been very worried, and although he isn't very fond of her most of the time, she was very gentle and he let her clean him for a while last night and they snuggled for hours.

They shaved the area, so once the hair grows back it will just look like his eyelid is closed. He still looks beautiful and I just LOVE that this is all behind us and we can move on. He also hasn't paid any attention to the wound, so no need for the e-collar thankfully. Again, THANK YOU for all the positive messages..this was quite an experience, but as always Albert teaches us how to be strong, and he is so much braver than we could ever be!

Growler--yes you are right hypertension can be common in CRF patients, i have him checked every 3 months for it..and his blood pressure has been normal. We can't find what caused the original inflammation, which very quickly led to glaucoma. We tested for fungus, tick bites, full blood panels to test for cancers, ulcers, etc. They are going to do a pathology on the eye that may tell us more..but it may just be (at least hopefully) the eye attacked itself and now that it's gone we are ok. His glaucoma was considered secondary because of the eye issues before hand. But yes it may have been hereditary..who knows with these 'second-hand' doggies! Regardless, I am grateful that he pulled through so well and we are home safe and sound. Thanks!

lm9012, Those pictures tell the tale He is home now and is going to be just fine with tender love and care. He will adjust in no time and once the hair grows in around the eye you will probably forget the eye is missing.

You are a great Mummy and Albert is lucky to have you taking care of him.
for a quick recovery!

Aw how sweet is that! Definitely a mushy moment! I hope the redness and swelling goes down quickly, and that he adjusts well! I'm sure he'll adapt in no time, plus he has a cute helper and some great pet parents to boot!

I'm so glad he's okay. He lost an eye, but as everyone said, these little guys are very resilient. He'll be running around in no time. I hope he has no other health issues, so good luck with those tests.

That's a very sweet picture with his kitty sister.

What a sweet picture! He's such a lucky boy to have such a doting family.

Keep in mind, though, that as the fur grows back and the eye heals, it's going to start to itch, so keep that bonnet handy.

for a speedy recovery!

Welcome home, Albert!
